with Portland's tax situation and Trent looking like he's headed for a big payday, the Blazers might have to choose between Kanter & Collins.

they are completely different players, but Kanter is a couple of tiers better than Zach when last seen.

who would you pick of the two?

Assuming the contracts are the same:

Kanter if you're trying to win an extra game or two next year.

Collins if they think he can be healthy long term.

    Enes.

He's not great on defense, but he's incredibly consistent on offense, knows his role, and is an ideal backup center.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Kanter has shown he's very good at some things in NBA, even if he has major weaknesses.

Zach still hasn't shown he can do anything particularly well.

So, while I'm far from the biggest Kanter fan, I'd rather have him on the roster. I can find him a role on a good team, whereas I'm not sure what role Zach can fill.

Who the heck is Zach Collins? I’ve seen Enes Kanter play basketball, so I’ll go with him.

Enes actually is very underrated on defense. He seems to have a bad reputation on defense, but he had the highest defensive rating on BOS last season. And BOS was the 4th rated defense last season.

This season, he has the 2nd best defensive rating behind only Giles. In his first stint with POR in 18-19, he was tied for 3rd highest defensive rating with Aminu, only behind Harkless and Nurkic.

And for his career, he’s been around average. Not the terrible that his reputation suggests.

    Enes.

I wouldn't pay either above the tax MLE.

I'm fine if Zach leaves. Wish he gets healthy with a long NBA career regardless if it's here or elsewhere.

I just don't want to see the team sign another Meyers Leonard / Evan Turner stupid contract.

even with his injuries, id rather have zach collins

hes young player with upside and i simply believe in him, while kanter is a solid backup center thats a good offensive player and rebounder... kanter was and is good for us, but he isnt really respectable player around the league and that his career shows, he was a backup player for most of his career and theres a reason for it... that being said, collins wont get more than nurk or leonard got, if even that much

Why would we pay Zach even close to the amount Nurk or Meyers got? At this point i would just pay him the QO.

With everything I read in here about the role of the 5 position in “today’s modern NBA”, I’m a little surprised that so many of you are going with the hulking center with no mobility to guard the perimeter or shoot the 3 ball. Personally, I’m not sure I buy that line of thinking, but there’s a reason Boston didn’t really use Kanter much and was willing to let him walk. I love Enes and hope the team can retain him, but Zach’s potential as a mobile big man with a decent outside shot is still worth taking a longer look at to see how he develops and if he can get healthy. I think Olshey will find a way to keep them both.

True, and if we do we have no idea what the cost of re-signing him will be. If cost savings are needed as a result, I would think that Olshey would part with Hood before letting Zach leave.

If the team pulls off a trade I believe it will be a consolidation trade that not only helps keep Trent but bolsters the forward center position. Thus anyone on the team but Dame and maybe Trent could be traded.

I like to hear that, although I question any rating system that puts Giles first; my eyeball test says he is not very good.

I think you can keep both due that Kanter is not going cost that much. Zach can play 2 position. I would not go with Zach last year stats I would at his 1st and 2nd year stats on defense plus his playoffs stats his 2nd year. Zach is not the offense and rebound buff like Kanter but I think he better defender then Kanter. I think there is role for both of them on this team.

The Giles rating just has to do with insufficient sample size. If you filter out players with less than 200 total minutes played to date then Giles wouldn’t qualify and Kanter would be the highest rated.

    yeah, that's correct

I like stats...they are critical adjuncts to observation that can filter out bias. But most of those advanced stats develop a lot of noise when you get to the low minutes players

    for example look at PER:

    upload_2021-1-31_10-3-42.png

I look at that list and I sure do think it's a very accurate reflection of the hierarchy of this season's players

but you also have to question 11, 12, and 14 being there. and of course, those are the three players averaging well under 30 minutes. No way has Kanter been better than AD, or Boucher been better than Lebron.
