QUOTE

Kirk Hinrich was a late addition to Team USA last year. This time, he could be a late subtraction. The U.S. National squad is looking at some difficult roster cuts before the Olympic qualifying tournament begins in Las Vegas, while Hinrich is facing difficult competition. It's probably safe to assume Orlando's J.J. Redick will not make the final roster, so Team USA will need to get from 16 players down to 12 once practice resumes Aug. 13. At the July 22 intrasquad scrimmage, only Redick played fewer minutes than Hinrich's 13. The Bulls guard finished with a mundane 4 points, 1 assist and 3 turnovers. The Team USA coaching staff recognized last year that Hinrich is not a true point guard and played him behind New Orleans' Chris Paul during the FIBA World Championships in

No mention of former Bull, Tyson Chandler being cut yet.

Well I would take Kirk over Mike Miller, but the PG spot is deep.

I'm not sure if this is Kirk's year. US team is pretty much set at the pg but if they want him to be part of the future team he should get in now.

I like Hinrich a lot, but his outside shot is questionable.

Check Hinrich's FG% and 3pt%. His selection might be questionable, but he's a good shooter if the stats don't lie.

What I found interesting was the "not a true PG" bit.

I'd rather have Kirk defensively against most international SGs than Mike Miller

    You're lucky!

Any chance they'll cut Jason Kidd instead? [IMG]

As would I, Kirk can bring so much more to the table than Mike Miller, but I guess thats not how they are looking at it.

With the PGs they have, what is needed more?

That is the thing they dont have a need for anymore PGs, I just dont like the idea of Miller on the team.

I really like having Mike Miller on the team, especially over guys like Tayshaun Prince and Shane Battier.

I would rather have Prince and Battier out there to defend over Miller to play a little and shoot some threes.

Battier took 4.5 3 pointers a game last year and made 42.1%. For his career he's 2.9 and 39.2%

Miller took 7.1 and shot 40.6%. His career numbers are 4.7 and 39.8%

I guess Miller's more known as a 3 point shooter, but Battier has really grown into it and he's a much better defender.

With Lebron, Melo and Prince, i don't see much time for any of em to be honest.

Kirk lost his legs in December/January, then got a 2nd wind. A lot of people expect he'll be fresher the whole season if he doesn't play international ball.

Again, the interesting bit in the story to me was that they didn't see him as a pure PG, and unfortunately, whatever skills he brought weren't enough that he was a slam dunk to make the team - or even get more than a few minutes.
