They can't hang in right wing cities. They would get taken out back and well you get the idea

Of all the things that are expected of a mayor, I’m not sure anything would possibly be above safety. Do people feel safe walking around Portland now vs previous years? Of course some will say yes, I feel great. But the percentage of people who don’t even go downtown or feel unsafe is higher than ever. Wheeler doesn’t seem to take a hard stance on anything. Pick something and dig in. I’m not sure what his “something” is.

In the prohibition years Portland was gangster central...lots of violence and crime and corruption....Seattle too....Oregon has a sketchy history and has had it's share of crime boss mayors...all that's really left of that era are strip clubs now

Civil disruption within a 2-3 block area versus a major explosion downtown that caused at least as much property destruction. Sounds like in a race for “Most Abject Mayor”, John Cooper of Nashville wins by a landslide (see how that works?).

More like 10-15 blocks. To be fair the explosion wasn't really Cooper's fault. Not sure what else he has failed to do there. Not familiar with his work or lack thereof.

Wheeler does bare a responsibility for the homelessness issues and not taking more action when it came to anarchists fucking up downtown.

Sure, the Nashville bombing was entirely unexpected and a terrible tragedy as a whole. The dude was a one-man-show wacko who, I'm certain, Mayor John Cooper (a Democrat, BTW), had nothing to do with. Nashville will (and is) quickly recover.

Hey, in other recent local news, though...

    https://fox17.com/news/local/nashvi...-destination-by-global-travel-tourism-council

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Nashville is now one of only two locations in the United States named a "Safe Travels" destination by the World Travel & Tourism Council.......

fixed Nashville has 11.4 violent crimes per 1000 people.....Tennessee has 5.95 per 1000 and the National avg is 4.......your article is false...completely false...this data is Dec 2020....only 3 % of the cities in the country have a worse crime rate....fewer have a higher violent crime rate

Gotta disagree. Police nationwide tied their own hands through a decades old pattern of misbehavior (and recent events around the country have shown that they have yet to learn anything positive). The protests were essentially against police violence. For the police to have cracked down in the “usual” fashion would have been a self fulfilling prophecy and even more justification of the protests. Trump sicced federal agents on the protestors and we all saw how well that worked. Now that Trump is gone and Biden appears to be trying take things in a better direction, there is currently no need for the continual protests, and yes, Wheeler should start cracking down. But then, that’s kind of tough if he doesn’t have the full support of the city council. Perhaps Wheeler would be more effective if Portland had an actual effective form of city government (City Manager) rather than having to worry about reelection with every single move he makes. Right now, whatever “protests” are taking place are essentially civil disobedience for the sake of the “disobedience” part and should be dealt with. But it’s always going to be about the optics, unfortunately.

And as has been pointed out, the homeless situation has been a problem for decades, with plenty of blame to go around. The pandemic just made it that much worse. For anyone to drop the blame solely in Wheeler’s lap is pure idiocy. And I have yet to hear anyone anywhere come up with a doable/workable solution to the homeless situation in Portland.....or anywhere else in this country.

And no, I really have no clear idea if Cooper is a good mayor or a bad one. I was simply showing a certain poster how the game can be played by those with less than accurate and/or complete information.....there is virtually always 360 different ways to look at an elephant.......

And this makes the situation in Portland any different exactly how? Nashville is not making the national headlines other than the lone incident Cliffy so conveniently pointed out. Go back and read @Stevenson's comments if you're really wanting a more local perspective on the matter. I highly doubt we'd be seeing these same comments from you if he had been the only one posting the concern in this thread.

I had called him an abject failure as Mayor of Portland. You seemed to take a bit of an issue with that remark. No worries, though. Just wanting to keep you in the loop. ;)

A poll of opinion doesn't have anything to with facts or reality.

There is cause for concern in every major city. It is a national problem which can not be solved effectively at the state or city level.

The major problems right now are definitely greatly exacerbated by covid-19 and the failures of the federal government.

    No question.
