    The Justice Department is investigating Rep. Matt Gaetz — a Florida Republican considered a close political ally of former president Donald Trump — over an alleged sexual relationship with an underage girl, according to people familiar with the matter, though the probe has been complicated by the congressman’s assertion that his family is being extorted.


    The investigation into Gaetz began some time last year, when Trump was still in office, after a criminal case against a different Florida politician led investigators to allegations that the congressman had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and paid for her travel, a person familiar with the matter said on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. As that probe was underway, the person said, Gaetz’s family raised allegations that the congressman was being extorted, and the FBI is separately exploring those claims.

    The Justice Department activity, which had been conducted in secret for months, burst into the open Tuesday when the New York Times published a report on the investigation into the alleged sexual relationship, and Axios published an interview in which Gaetz confirmed the probe but claimed the allegations against him were “rooted in an extortion effort against my family.”

    Separately, Axios reported Tuesday that Gaetz was telling confidants he was contemplating not seeking reelection and possibly leaving his post early for a job at Newsmax, a conservative media outlet.

    Gaetz cast the lone 'no' vote on a widely bipartisan human trafficking bill that passed unanimously through the U.S. Senate in September [2017] before sailing through the House by a count of 418 to 1.

    The story of Matt Gaetz is linked to that of Joel Greenberg and it's a doozy.

    Greenberg was elected county tax assessor in 2016. He was 31, recently married, with no relevant experience. He hired members of his wedding party to staff, issued $2 million in contracts to family, and started a private business in his county office, billing the county for his private business expenses. He used county money to buy guns, ammo, body armor, even a drone, and ordered staff to wear guns strapped to their waists on duty. He was originally investigated for stalking a person who dared to run against him, creating a fake Twitter account in the other person's name, and posting all kinds of reprehensible shit on it, making it appear to be coming from this other person. Further investigation revealed his crooked business practices. Also he is accused of identity theft. In Florida, when a person moves to the state and gets a Florida driver's license, they turn in their previous license and it's supposed to be shredded. Greenberg created fake IDs by putting his own photo on these licenses, creating several fake personae. He allegedly used these fake IDs for child sex trafficking. During the course of investigation, it was discovered Gaetz allegedly trafficked an underage girl across state lines.

    Greenberg and Gaetz are close friends. Greenberg is a loyal Trumper.
