What's the best we could get for CJ and Nurk?

Every time the team gets into a rut I blow it up in my mind. Obviously, just about everyone on here does that. But thinking about what we can get for just CJ is too depressing. (I used to think Philly could use him, but they got Seth Curry. Then I thought the Knicks would like a star, but turns out all they needed was Thibs. Then I thought maybe Orlando, but they've blown it up already. So maybe the best bet is the Rockets? Maybe we can get a few of their picks. Or perhaps Horford and some picks from OKC... but I digress.) But what about CJ and Nurk? It pains me to contemplate this, because Nurk is my fave center since the Mighty Sabas (except for maybe Oden for about the week he was healthy and producing), but the fact remains that
(a) nobody's going to offer us anything great for just CJ, but
(b) Nurk could look like a real bargain to somebody, but
(c) Nurk just seems to be injury-prone and not the Nurk of Old any more

Now, of course nobody wants to trade a superstar for two non-superstars, but the fact remains that it happens remarkably often (think Jeff Hornacek. Andrew Lang and Tim Perry for Charles Barkley, or whatever the Nets gave up for Harden). What do people think the best haul we could get for that pair would be?

Talking of the Nets, I think that perhaps the likeliest star we could land would be Kyrie. He's not even their PG now (that's Harden) and they landed him before they got Harden and CJ might be at least as valuable to them as their third-string guy, and less of a headache. But we've had enough undersized guards (and part of the point of this would be to convince Powell to stay as our full-time SG).

Would Giannis ever demand out of Milwaukee? Mayyyybe. They seem to be underachieving, and he's actually a star who might not seek a big market above all, a rare thing indeed. But didn't he just sign an extension? I think even if he wanted to leave, the Bucks would beg him to give them one more chance to build round him. And you know EVERYONE would have a package to offer for him.

One player I really rate as a sort of poor-man's Kawhi is Jaylen Brown. He's always been a great defender (wouldn't THAT be a pleasant change!) but has transformed into a great offensive player, too. But Boston would have to move Kemba as well, because I doubt they'd want a Walker-McCollum backcourt. And dealing with Ainge is always tricky.

Of course Ben Simmons is always the dream, and it's pretty clear that Philly's path forward is building the best supporting cast around Embiid, and while Simmons refuses to shoot threes... But Nurk would be wasted on being Embiid's backup, and Embiid would probably not like all the extra work that having a sieve like CJ in the backcourt would bring him.

Thoughts? To take our mind off the impending quick exit from (or lack of entrance to) the postseason.

 

McCollum, Nurk, Collins for Siakam, Anunoby, Baynes

 

Yeah, I thought of Siakam just because of those rumors that he was unhappy in Toronto. But, while Toronto is used to an undersized backcourt, one of them was defensive tank Kyle Lowry - I don't know if they'd be happy trotting out a VanVleet-McCollum pairing. And I think they'd want to keep Anunoby, wouldn't they?
But hey, it would be a nice reunion for Powell...

Nurk is not that valuable. Slow, can't finish at the rim, no outside shot, poor ball handler, poor health. I dont think any contender would start him. CJ is an elite shot creator and maker but has been spoiled by Stotts and given cart blanch to shoot at will. I dont think many coaches and teammates would like that. He would have to change and become more disciplined in shot selection.

His close friend is the leader of the team. What happens when that is taken away?

 

I think we should find a way to flip CJ to NY for their cap space and some young assets (Quickly), send the young assets to a third team, and get a few vets. It seems like a better use of our resources than trying to land another star. I think if we bring back Powell, could shore up our defense, and bring in a real backup PG (or distributor) we may be in better shape than expected next year (assuming a healthy year).

Vets to look at

Demar Derozan - we could surround him with shooters and basically let him run a drive n kick offense while Dame is out. Obviously a different coach than Terry would get the most out of him.
Rubio - he could provide a solid 25 mpg next to Dame and Powell, and he can guard 2/3s well.
Cory Joseph - he's the pick if we're banking on Ant's development, plays D, no-nonsense, familiar with Powell.

If swinging for the fences, I think you see if there's any way to turn CJ into Larry Nance or Myles Turner. I don't think those teams would be interested in CJ with their young talent, but maybe there's a 3-way somehow. I just don't know who wants to commit to CJ. He may fit well in Philly, but I doubt we want to commit to Tobias Harris (even though his on-court fit would be excellent, that contract )

CJ for Hayward is the deal I think could happen. Straight across works.

 

Turner would be fantastic, as long as you had a follow up trade for Nurk.
Harris' contract is terrible, but the difference between CJ and Tobias is ~$5M/yr. The extra 15% cost would be worth it given the much better fit.

Why would Hornets be interested in that trade?
Hayward is a much better fit on that team.

 

Your question is unclear. Do you mean what will happen to CJ when he goes to a new team or what will happen with Dame if his friend is traded?
If the former, I guarantee CJ will put up at least as good stats as here, especially if he goes to somewhere like the Rockets. If the latter, as other people have pointed out, Dame's buddies get traded ALL THE TIME. In fact, it's almost a running joke.

 

Why trade for vets who aren't as good as CJ? Either upgrade or rebuild!

 

I actually think Turner and Nurk could play next to each other (especially with Nurk's high-post offense and injury issues). Turner could play 20 mpg at center (Nurk off the floor, 5 out) and 12 mpg with Nurk as a stretch-4 and weak side shot blocker. I'm sure Indiana would demand Roco, but if we could keep him and let him guard on the perimeter more I think we'd be nasty.

 

I didn't mean to list those as trade targets. I think we'd try to move CJ for assets. With the full MLE we may have room to grab Derozan or Joseph. Rubio would be a trade target but hopefully we'd have something else coming back. The idea being that even though CJ > Rubio, the improvements you'd see on team defense, setting up players like Nas, and letting Dame play off the ball more often would be worth it.

 

They already have 4 good guards in Monk, Graham, Ball, and Rozier. Why would they trade a forward for a 5th?

 

Since this is another CJ trade thread now... I will say that I think the Knicks would give up Quickley and they're 2021 draft picks (their first, the Mavs first, the Piston's second and their second) for CJ, if their rumored interest in CJ earlier this season was legit. They would actually still have enough cap space to sign a max player to go with CJ and the five players including Randle and Robinson they have under contract.

I don't want all of that young talent but the Raptors might. So CJ to the Knicks and Siakam to us might just make sense for all three teams.

 

Porzingis is probably gettable, but he's even more of an injury risk than Nurk, and I don't know if I could handle CJ on the Mavs.
