So you fire JD and Gorton on the edge of great things, and promote a totally unproven and untested Drury to run everything. You are a disgrace Dolan.
Drury has been the assistant GM to Gorton for a few years now. He's not coming in without some experience.
Disagree - the guy has zero experience being an NHL GM, and zero experience being an NHL team President. That is no experience to me. You cannot take a guy with zero experience in both of those jobs and give him both roles day 1. That is not how good organizations do things.
Mark Messier on ESPN Mark Messier appeared on the Michael Kay radio show on ESPN today and had some interesting remarks. He was asked about possibly coaching to which he said “1000%”. Messier noted that he has not spoken to anyone around the team in years. When asked about the Tom Wilson incident he said he didn’t expand the Rangers to respond to the Panarin injury because that’s not how they are built. “In my opinion, if you’re going to win, you got to be able to win in the street and the alley,” he said. “I particularly would not have built the team that didn’t have answers in this regard.” A scathing statement just 30 minutes after JD and Jeff Gorton were let go.
If he needs advisors they should just hire a totally different president who can handle it on his own. Let Drury just deal with being a GM.
I mean it is obvious that they are outmatched against some teams physically, against others they do step up. But I agree with Messier. Teams like the current Rangers don’t survive past the first round of the playoffs
Agreed - but to me if he is called Pres and GM, I think that ship has sailed. Although with Dolan who knows.
Drury is the guy. No maybe that will change tomorrow 71, he is THE guy. Sather back in mix also. And watch Messier end up in the door somehow, maybe head coach. The New York Rangers announced today that team President John Davidson and General Manager Jeff Gorton are leaving the organization, and Associate General Manager Chris Drury has been promoted to President and General Manager, effective immediately. Senior Advisor Glen Sather will work with Drury during this transition and continue to consult with the team.
”We want to thank JD and Jeff for their contributions to the organization. They are both great hockey professionals who worked hard for the Rangers, however, in order for the team to succeed in the manner our fans deserve, there needs to be a change in leadership,” owner James L. Dolan said in the statement. “Chris is a very sought-after executive and a strong leader, who has proven himself to be one of the top young minds in hockey. We are confident he will effectively guide the team to ensure the long-term success we promised Rangers fans.”
Drury is not coming off the ice to step into an exec role. He has relevant experience having served as assistant GM for a while, so if he's the guy to lead us i am much more at ease than if it was someone external. I do think one of the Prez/GM roles will be delegated to someone else. In Dolan's quote as Drury being "a sought-after executive" you can tell he is very highly thought of, within the organization and outside of it, and was going to be appointed sooner rather than later or we would have lost him to another team, but since this double-firing happened overnight, Dolan did not have a successor ready so he is making Drury serve as both for the time being.
We'll agree to disagree on that. To go from an assistant GM for a few years to being the Pres and GM of a top organization in the NHL is not relevant experience for that level of accountability and responsibility. Now you want to say in a few weeks a Pres is named and Drury is just the GM, okay I am good from his experience POV (still a disgrace that JD/Gorton were fired), but today he is Pres and GM, and no way is he ready for that or nor does he have the level of experience for those dual roles. Other than the people in here grasping at thin air to say they'll bring someone else in as Pres, because we all know Drury is not experienced for that level, everything says he is Pres and GM. I don't think you say Drury new Pres and GM just to say a month later, oh now we have someone else coming in as Pres. I don't see that at all. If he was named GM today, I wouldn't have an issue with that part of it. But he is not ready to be the Pres of an organization with zero NHL GM experience. With that said, maybe he'll do a great job, who knows, just saying he does not have the resume to take on the Pres job currently.
I never put anything past awful Dolan, but I see no way Drury is not the Pres going forward. You don't flat out say Pres and GM, just to strip him of the Pres title in a month or two. He is the Pres, period I think.
That's all we're saying chuck, that for now he's been named as the standing president but it's very possible by next season he's solely just the GM. Right now they obviously don't have a separate one to name, or they truly believe he can handle both duties. I guess they could've just said Sather is acting president but maybe it's more a confidence boost for Drury.
And I disagree with that totally. I can see the other way, but I just don't see how you announce someone as the Pres, and then say oh we now are brining in a new Pres to be Drury's boss. AGAIN the caveat is Dolan is a disgrace, so logic not need apply here so it could happen. But good organizations do not name a Pres, and then 2 weeks or 3 months later pull that title and name someone else Pres. They did NOT have to name him Pres today, but they did. Why - just to strip that title in 2 months - nonsense. Drury is the Pres. Maybe someone else takes the lower job of GM, I can see that, but Drury is the Pres. Unless the Dolan factor comes into play again.
but it’s very possible. Drury was the assistant gm for a reason, to eventually be the gm, but i think this double firing was a knee jerk reaction by Dolan that left him without cover for Pres. Since Drury has been with the team for a while it’s much easier to say to him “hey i need you to dual hat for a couple months til i figure out the prez situation” than to bring in someone else without due diligence and then have to fire again.
Maybe chuck, i don't know, it just seems like alot on Drurys plate being he's never been higher than an ass't GM, but hopefully he can do a great job at whatever it is. Guess he doesn't have to worry about firing himself as GM. lol
I think this is fair because Dolan is clueless and sucks. Good organizations don't name a Pres one day to demote him and strip the title 2 months later. Organizations led by disgraceful people like James Dolan might - I agree. And remember this, he didn't have to name a Pres, who cares if a Pres was named. Name Drury the GM, looking for a Pres. Or name Drury GM and interim Pres. To name Drury both flat out is crazy, but that's Dolan. I say Sather has a hand in this and with help support Drury in a role he is not ready for, Pres. With that said I say Drury is Pres for sure, not ready. And 50/50 they bring in someone else to take the GM role. Not the other way around.
I will say one thing for sure after today, the rebuild is OVER. With 31 mill in cap space (assuming DeAngelo is bought out), and a ton of assets to move, the Rangers are pushing their chips in this summer. Expect a big time C to be added, expect some toughness and grit added, maybe expect Buch gone. I thought it would happen anyway, but today stamps it, the patience is over and the old Rangers are back this summer. I just hope they do it in a smart way, not in a dump too many or the wrong valuable kids. Miller, Kakko, Lafreniere, Fox, Schneider all need to be untouchable IMO. And I would put Kravtsov pretty darn close to untouchable.
