You can't expect Dame to get 5 every game. Nobody gets their average every game. It's all over the place. Ja - as few as 0 and as many as 15 FTA this year. Harden - as few as 0 and as many as 16 FTA this year. Luka - as few as 2 and as many as 15 FTA this year. The results are only down if I cherry pick the highest point of the graph as the norm. Dames average in 2020 is 0.194 FTA per usage and in years prior it's 0.195. No change. There is one big downturn in Dame's graph but that is explainable and I expected it. In 2018-2019 the NBA stopped giving 3 FTA on 3-pointers with bang bang foul/continuation. Before that change, Dame and Harden were having a field day drawing 3 free throws. Here are Dames averages by year: 2016 0.198 2017 0.219 <-- at this point Dame had mastered getting fouled on 3-pointers coming off screens. 2018 0.170 <-- this is the year the NBA stopped calling fouls on 3-pointers unless 100% obvious. 2019 0.202 <-- Dame somehow get's his average back despite the change in continuation calls 2020 0.192 I'm not saying Dame shouldn't get more calls. But I was looking for was two things 1. Is there some kind of recent conspiracy against Dame with a big downturn in his FTA rates? No, there isn't. 2. Does Dame get fewer calls than other PG with similar games? No he gets significantly more than his clearest counterpart - Steph Curry. Whether he should get even more MORE than Curry, could be. But I suspect each teams fans would say the same about their player and would be able to point to all the times their guy gets hit with no call.
Per 36 FT's per game for those players you mentioned: Steph 6.5 Luka 7.5 (Not going to count Harden as he's not normal) Morant 6.7 Beal 7.7 Based on the tone of your posts, one would assume Dame must be around 2 or 3 (since you claim he should average "at least 5" ft's a game). Dame 7.3
Here is Dame vs the combined numbers for Harden, Luka, Beal. Notice their FTA rate is down and Dame has equaled or passed them. BTW even Luka gets fewer FTA as % of usage than Dame - he just has higher usage. And Dame's FTA rate is much higher than Steph Curry. 2016-Present
OK. These are real statistics well stated. However, when Travis and Mike are making multiple comments about Dame being hit hard and not being awarded FTA, and the plays show Dame knocked to the floor with no call, officiating professionalism is highly in question. In the Nets game there were no-calls of fouls of Dame that add up to at least 5 FTA. Even in the Celtics, game, we again saw Dame take a charge by Tatum that should have been called as a foul, but was again a no-call. I don't think there is a conspiracy against Dame, but I hope for consistency and accuracy from the officials that makes for honest games.
I thought the offensive foul call on Dame last night was BS and he should have been at the line shooting free throws. I see bad or missed calls a lot with Dame. But at the same time, Luka got ejected last night over an offensive foul call. So did Carlisle. I just think this kind of thing happens to every player who attacks the paint and I think NBA officiating leaves a lot to be desired... putting it nicely.
I'm curious, first, what do you mean by FTA % Usage? secondly, what do you use as a data source and do you have some kind of chart-making app?
FTA % Usage is free throw attempts divided by usage. Usage I arbitrary made up to roughly try to correlate with what I thought would drive getting free throws. All normal basketball events such as rebound, steal, assist, blocked shot get one usage count. Shots get two. Shots at the rim get 4. It’s arbitrary but all players use the same formula and any usage stat will be arbitrary. I could have just done free throws divided by shots but activity besides shots can generate fouls and free throws. Also clearly shots at the rim are more likely to generate free throws than shots. So I count all activity but count shots 2x and shots at the rim 4x. My data source is the NBA stats API where I wrote an application that lets me query event by event. My graphing is just Excel.
The technical foul on Dame in the LA Lakers game was a point of emphasis for a no-call foul, wasn't it? The May 7 LA Laker win was a poorly called game with many examples of non-professionalism by the refs. Travis and Michael did not explain what the technical was charged for. Does anyone know? Will this situation perhaps call the poor officiating to the attention of NBA quality monitors?
Denver Game 3 Playoff loss resulted from poor inconsistent, inaccurate calls by the Refs as I feared may happen. Radio announcers and Dame commented that touch fouls, and the phantom Nurk foul 5 of Jokic were severely inconsistent with the hard hit, shot changing fouls of Dame and the Blazers, and that kept Denver in the game and prevented a Blazer 4th Q comeback run. The Blazers can and should demand much better officiating on our home court!
There is no way that in this Denver Game 3 Dame should not have at least his average 7 FTA! And Nurk, CJ, and Norm should have FTA that should have added another 14 FTA to make up the FTA deficit.
Lillard leads the league in FT attempts this post season. He is averaging 11 attempts per game. That is 1.5 more per game than the second best and 6 MORE per game than the top Nuggets player in Jokic
The refs did not lose the game for the Blazers lost night, they just upped the difficulty level. The touch fouls Nurk got called for on his 4th/5th were just stupid, both by him and the refs. That said Portland's lack of 3pt shooting and inability to guard the arc is what cost them the game and gave HCA back to the Nuggets. Doesn't matter now though, on to game 4!
The part that pisses me off is that I have been watching players of similar caliber get ridiculous calls my entire life, but not Dame. Watch how the refs treat Anthony Davis and then tell me that Dame gets the same treatment. The game is rigged and for once I want it to be rigged in our favor dammit!
Pretty sure every fan base thinks this about their stars. The reffing was pretty awful last night, but on a different night it may have favored the Blazers. Will say that they didn’t really help themselves last night either.
The thing is that I don't like how the refs allow teams to play Dame really physically on defense, but a guy like Anthony Davis can't be touched.
What’s your day job? I remember messing around with the stats API a few years back and it kept limiting my calls. Maybe they’ve made it better.
Pretty sure there are plenty of games where Davis gets knocked around the whole game with no fouls. At least if you go by Lakers forums.
