Sometimes the worst thing you can do is what the player wants due to you have 14 other players might see it differently.
So - people who weren't impressed with Stotts are not entitled to an opinion on his replacement? An unusual and puzzling take on the situation.
You quote me saying "start a Fire Kidd thread now" and imply that means I think nobody is allowed to have a personal opinion on the matter? That's the real unusual and puzzling take. I'm 100% ok with everyone having an opinion on anything basketball related on this board. In fact, I'm glad there are differing opinions around here; this place would suck if we all agreed.
Don't know about the worked up part, but certainly guilty of being relentless about issues... I can own that!
I think he would be great. Learned in the Miami system. Great demeanor. Appears to have great energy and works hard. Immediate success at college level. Doubt if he is interested in leaving Michigan.
Potentially similar to when Mark Jackson was ousted for Steve Kerr in Golden State and the turnaround they had as well. Coaching matters and Jason Kidd isn’t the right coach for this team at this time. However all of the coaches being considered carry some element of risk: Chauncey Billups reportedly has a very high BBIQ but can he translate that knowledge to coaching? Is it too risky to hire a coach with zero head coaching experience? Juwan Howard has been a successful coach at the collegiate level but will his style translate to the NBA? Becky Hammon has learned under one of the true greats in Pop but the question still remains whether grown men would be comfortable being led by a woman in a league that’s almost universally male? What has she actually learned from Pop that she could translate as a HC? Mike D’antoni has had some successful playoff runs with a number of teams but has never been able to get them over the hump and win a championship. Is his approach too similar to Stotts (all offense no defense)? Jeff Van Gundy hasn’t coached a team in over a decade. Has the game passed him by? Jason Kidd has been mediocre as a coach during his two previous stints as HC. Does anyone believe he will magically get better in Portland just because he has a good relationship with Dame? Maybe time to pair Dame with a coach that he doesn’t see as a friend and who will demand excellence and incorporate some accountability? Not an easy decision for management as there’s a lot of variables to consider, not the least of which is trying to keep their superstar PG happy. I don’t envy Olshey because he has one chance to get this right. If he fails and picks the wrong coach, Dame is as good as gone. Will be interesting to see who is hired.
I'm intrigued by Mike D'Antoni not because I think he'll be better than Stotts (I'm not convinced anyone would be with this roster) but because I think Dame would average 40 with him as coach. And then we get a good return when, after winning MVP and missing the playoffs, he finally demands a trade.
I wouldn't abject to Mike D'Antoni. His teams are fun to watch. The guy just hasn't been able to get it done in the playoffs. It would be a lot better than JKidd!
