So the cheapest package for me in Central OR with any of the available vendors is ~85/ month.

    Gotta be kidding me.

Through Sling, I had all the national channels + LP (1 team) + NBA TV for $48 while in the midwest.

Maybe Root will make a deal with Comcast to stream on their channel with the providers Root currently doesn't have?

I mean what else is Comcast going to do with their SportsNW thing?

When this garbage happened with Comcast years ago there weren’t options for me out here. So it was one big middle finger from the Blazers.

now that I finally have YTTV and was able to watch Blazers for a season. They go for a quick cash grab again. But I have options now. So when I don’t pay more to switch at least this time it’s one big middle finger from me to the Blazers. [IMG]

I'm not sure this is a cash grab.

Sounds like a temporary step until something bigger.

NBA is next up for a big rights increase, and $75 billion is the price

    • Early thinking within league circles suggests the NBA will seek a $75 billion multiyear rights package, up from its current $24 billion deal, which pays $2.6 billion per year.
    • The NBA could increase that figure to $8 billion per year in its next agreement with partners Turner Sports and ESPN.

After the National Football League celebrated its history-making 11-year contract worth more than $100 billion, attention shifted to the NBA’s deal, which runs through the 2024-25 season. Early thinking within league circles suggests the NBA will seek a $75 billion rights package, up from its current $24 billion deal, which pays $2.6 billion per year.

One person familiar with sports media deals said the NBA could get $70.2 billion over nine years, using metrics including total viewer hours, which helps networks determine the value of sports league rights. The person also said tier-one sports rights are important to streaming services.

The individual asked not to be identified due to privacy concerns.

The NBA is currently partnered with AT&T-owned WarnerMedia and Disney, the latter of which agreed to pay the NFL $2.7 billion per year until 2033. Should the NBA triple its rights and replicate its nine-year deal length, it would generate around $7 billion to $8 billion per season. That puts it just behind the NFL’s new $10 billion per year average once the new agreements begin.

The NBA also has a $1.5 billion streaming deal with Chinese-based company Tencent Holdings.

“I think everyone expects that so long as the public is demonstrating through ratings that they are watching the NBA, you can probably expect increases there as well,” said former CBS Sports president Neal Pilson. “I would think the NBA is going to look for significant increases.”

The NBA has a good reason to seek more money for its rights. The league has more global appeal than the NFL and has a younger demographic, too, as Generation Z continues to support the NBA and Gen Alpha appears to continue the trend.

Though ratings declined in 2020 primarily due to pandemic factors, the NBA has seen increases throughout its current 2020-21 season. The league is attempting to create more meaningful games with its play-in tournament, which performed well last year.

On a media call last week discussing the NFL’s new rights, ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro said the network is “very pleased” with the NBA’s partnership and “how those games have performed.”

The NBA will be highly sought-after as a top-tier sports league. Fox Sports was interested in landing pro basketball before the NBA’s last deal in 2014. But Pilson said the NBA will more than likely stay with current partners once new agreements come around.

“I think the NBA will stay with the two network packages,” Pilson said. “That gives them the promotion base, and sometimes when you end up with lots of networks, people can’t find games when they’re on. College basketball is the best example — you want to see a game, and you don’t know where it is.”

Again, it’s still early, but the second most popular league on the U.S. sports landscape knows its day is coming. And as of now, the aim is $75 billion.

Said Pitaro: “The partnership with the NBA is incredibly important to us, and we’re looking forward to getting back at the table with Adam [NBA commissioner Adam Silver] and his team when the time is right.”

The NBA declined to comment due to privacy concerns about the financials of its media deals.

They used to get so much time and decent (not a ton sure) amount of money out of me. 20+ games a year from Hood River. Through some lean 21-61 type years even. But now… nah. I think I’ve been to 1 game in the last 6 or 7 years. But hey if they make it up elsewhere good on them I guess. But def a middle finger from me.

Dont forget it's a entertainment business, not just a sporting contest. If I dont like the food and/or service Ill go somewhere else. If my wife wants me to watch a movie that doesnt sound good to me, I wont watch.
People should spend their entertainment TIME and Money on things they enjoy!

    Example....

AT&T owns CNN/HBO/Warner. Warner is TnT. Just did mega merger with Discovery networks. TnT tries to pay rights for all the NBA games. Have TnT creates more channels. Their version of basketball only The Ocho!

    But wait....

Disney owns ESPN... Disney decides add to their new streaming service and go after the new NBA mega contract. THE OCHO LIVES!

    But wait, there's more!

Amazon says they want mega sports shiny toy!

Lot's of players in the streaming arena. They all need content.

yes, but more competition has not led to cheaper prices/more options for the consumer. instead it's led to more consolidation and mergers which is in turn increasing prices for the consumer. the cord cutting/streaming prices are essentially exactly where the conventional cable prices are. Look at how YoutubeTV/ Sling/ Hulu have increased rates over the past few years and bundled packages of channels just like the cable companies do.

    True.

I went back to Comcast a few months ago because their package deal beat streaming.

I do too, but even if you have Root, last time the blazers were on that channel the games got interrupted by whatever was going on in Seattle. I doubt that will change cus FUCK SEATTLE. So I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to get that channel.

Dame is a spokesman for Hulu. I doubt the Blazers sabotage a relationship with the best player on their team. The reason i went with Hulu in Springfield is because i knew i could get NBCNW. I just moved back to Colorado, and Hulu gets nothing of local sports that's not on the big networks. Not being a fan of either the Nuggets or Avalanche, who cares. But i do like the Rockies and they're not carried. Really sucks. We're weighing our options on TV products. The Broncos are covered by CBS,NBC & ESPN. Covered under Hulu. Good news as a Broncos fan, games on NFL Network are put on Local TV as well. I've got to believe Hulu will have the Blazers covered. Makes no sense that wouldn't happen, avoiding potentially further alienating your biggest star in the history of your franchise. Clyde wasn't as big in the National Spotlight. Dame is seen representing many National Companies products.
