The Knicks have sold coaches on the fanbase at the Garden forever...not because they had a great roster...

Yeah I agree we should be looking for someone fresh, but what if hiring a retread is about appeasing Dame? He did say he wanted experience no?

That's not it at all. I have concerns that if she ended up not being a good fit, the team would hang onto her longer than they should because they are afraid of the bad optics of firing the first woman head coach.

We have a small window where Dame is still in his prime, and I'm fearful that we could lose a large chunk of the next 4-5 years because the team seams to take a really damn long time to fire their coaches. As I mentioned in my original post, it took them nine years to fire Stotts, despite the fact that it was painfully clear that he was a mediocre coach. I think the team would be much quicker in moving on from Billups if he ended up being a bad fit, while it would probably take them longer to move on from Hammon if she ended up being a bad fit because they don't want the negative press.

If Billups was one of his preferences, I dont think so. Neil needs to make the best hire ultimately, with Dame input, but Neil also needs to explain to Damian why other coaches are great picks to do the job. Sell Dame on it if the next coach isnt on dame's wish list.

Unquestionably hard working, appropriate and professional. Humble can go hang.
Yes, there were rumbles about Mark Jackson.

Except we now have a woman owner. So a woman owner firing the first woman coach is not bad optics.

In fact I would venture to say a man with Hanmon's experience and reputation would probably have a head coach gig by now.

and a woman director of basketball strategy.

i still don't agree with the premise, nor do i really care. are we really gonna make the hire based on how easy/difficult it is to fire them? that should not even be a criteria.

    Eh..... doubtful.

Here's the problem, I think Dame can carry this team to the 8th seed no matter who's coaching. So let's say Becky comes on but she's all the horrible awful things that Calvin Natt said she is. But the team has a winning record. No better than when Stotts was here, but it's a winning record. How does the team fire her? They'd have to wait at a minimum 2-3 years, probably more on the 3+ years side before they could fire her and not look horrible. There will definitely be politics in play if you hire her. It's sad but true.

And I like her. I think she's going to be a great head coach, but that doesn't assuage my fears that if it doesn't work out, we could be stuck with her for most of the rest of Dame's prime.

I still think she replaces POP, and soon, maybe another year. If she wasn't interested in doing so, why would she still be there? Its possible, her, Pop and Org have a proposed succession plan in place.

You don't think that should be a criteria after we just spent 3-4 years longer than necessary on a head coach that CLEARLY wasn't going to get it done? And with only maybe 4-5 years of Dame being one of the top players in the league? You don't think that should be something that's considered?

no. how about we do our due diligence on the interview and hire the right person in the first place?

even then, i don't agree that it will be difficult. there's enough ways to leak info to the media now to make it very public if she flames out due to legit reasons.

I don't know that Hammon "should be hired"; there are a number of excellent assistant coaches that have as good of qualifications as her. She definitely deserves to be a real candidate. If she does get hired she deserves the same respect and criticisms as any man who's coached.

Nobody today would say a coach's future results will be judged differently because of their race, or nationality, or sexual preference. It's a bigoted view that posters on this board are saying judgement would be different because she is a woman.

And really, if we flame out, Olshey is gone. At that point, it's easy for the new GM to want to bring in their own coach.
