We live in a time when an isolated allegation, not a charge, not a conviction, not a pattern of behavior, is enough in some people’s eyes to end a person. Says more about them than it does about Billups. The only fact in this whole thing is nobody knows the facts and anyone stating otherwise is purely speculating, and that’s it.

Good points. I'm not about to get into a debate about an incident as old as this one. I'll just say that if a rape actually occurred, it's too bad the players weren't charged and the matter settled in a court of law. I know that these things are hard to prove, and I understand that the pressures on a victim to avoid the ugliness of a trial and everything that goes with it. Settling for cash can look a whole lot more enticing than having your whole sexual history trotted out in court. That said, taking that route means that the "truth" never gets settled upon and everyone involved can play the events in their own least-objectionable way. One question I have is whether the Blazers are using the media, with the "leak" to Woj as a way to run a PR test before making a formal announcement. It wouldn't surprise me at all, given the social media blow-up it's causing, for them to pivot to another candidate and say that they had never really decided on Billups.
