The 56th game *hitting streak belongs to Joe DiMaggio,...
but the 84 consecutive game on base record belongs to Ted Williams.

*If I'm not mistaken DiMaggio hit in 75 consecutive games with the San Francisco Seals.

 

Next question; Without Googling, Name the two pitchers who pitched 27 World Series innings without yielding an earned run.

 

Christy Matthewson was one, but I have no clue who's the other?

Matthewson was the first pitcher I idolized as a kid, who I never saw pitch due to not being born.
Christy is/was the King of CG's (amongst other things) in my opinion. Won 20 or more games over a dozen times consecutively, with four of those dozen 30 Win seasons. Imo, it was Matthewson who set the bar for greats to follow as far as CG's, ERA and every stat known to man.

What makes this so amazing is he threw complete and scoreless games, 3 consecutive times in the 1905 World Series.
He credited his W.S. and year long performance to his Catcher Roger Bresnahan(sp?) who memorized each hitters weaknesses.

in 2016* one late night, I watched Keith Olberman unveil glass negative/photos, of the 1905 World Series, which had recently been found and auctioned, and the public was seeing them for the first time on that show. Half the collection was Christy Matthewson photos. Needless to say Olberman outlined the mythological genius and play of Matthewson, especially in the 1905 W.S., as well as his entire career, including his early passing from Tuberculosis due to WWI chemicals he handled in the Army.
[*] how I recall the year- the next morning I called an old friend in Detroit, to tell him about the negatives, and I spent the next month trying to track down any story on them to no avail. My friend passed away a month later, and he never got to see the photos, or the Cubs win the World Series, which he placed a large bet on the W.S. in Vegas for the Cubs to win it all that year. He didn't live to collect his bet, but his widow did.

Matthewson was a 3 Sport Athlete in College.

Those glass negative photos weren't even known to exist prior.

I've never been an Olberman fan, but that was a great show that night.

I've had this Bust since 1963. A set of 20 player/busts, sold only in baseball parks that year.

 

I have absolutely no idea who the other 2nd Pitcher was!

 

I'll provide a hint for the other pitcher....he accomplished his feat while playing for the Yanx.

So many great Yankee Pitchers in postseason, ie Allie Reynolds, Vic Raschi, Ruffing, Pennock (my father in law's last name), Gomez, Whitey Ford, Petite, Guidry, Catfish and a lot of others.

I believe the answer is probably Waite Hoyt... if I'm not mistaken he also threw 3 shutouts in the 1921 World Series!*

*Interesting thing about Hoyt's 1921 W.S. feat was- he lost game 8, but did not give up an earned run in the three complete games he pitched.
