Watched it the other day. Its interesting and I had no idea about the whole story of the Mavericks. I had vaguely heard of them. Cool story. The documentary kind of lacked a little excitement. It would have been cool if they talked about them doing blow and banging hookers or something rambunctious.
I liked the clips where they were all smoking and drinking beer in the clubhouse. Very interesting part of local history that I knew nothing about.
They really did represent the quirkiness of Portland better than anything I've seen. IF the city were to land a team I'd really like to see this name revived.
Here's a great read on the Mavs manager - http://www.wweek.com/portland/artic...iginal_outlaw_gang_the_mavericks_a_new_f.html
The Portland Mavericks Just watched the documentary on Netflix and was really proud to see that one of my all time favorite baseball teams got some recognition. Bing Russell is smiling from somewhere right now. What a team and just goes to show Portland will pack the house for the independant strangely wonderful team Bing assembled in the 70's. If you haven't seen the Portland Mavericks or the documentary, I highly recommend it. Well done piece of film. Anyone else remember those days! Brought back some good memories from my first love in sports, baseball.
Such a good show. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's funny because I realized, as I was watching, that Jon Yoshiwara was my middle school gym teacher. I had no idea that he used to play baseball.
I am!! Those were some pretty wild times in town. JoGarza was my hero! Oh, and who could forget Jim Bunning (Ball Four) rekindling his notorious career with the Mavs! That was awesome! This is an entertaining documentary. Watched it last night..
I’m old enough to remember that it was Jim Bouton and NOT Jim Bunning……….the only notoriety Bunning had was as an ultra-conservative congressman from Kentucky after he retired from baseball. Give me Bouton any day……
This is a duplicate thread...we had a long thread about the Mavericks a few years back...I remember them ..there's a Netflix documentary on the team as well.
