Reds jump on Snell early, finish Pirates with long ball

CINCINNATI 13, PITTSBURGH 4
PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Cincinnati Reds were the latest teamto add to Ian Snell's woes. For Matt Belisle, the PittsburghPirates were the perfect fit.

The Reds scored four times in the first inning and Belisleremained unbeaten against the Pirates this season with Fridaynight's 13-4 victory in the opener of a three-game seriesbetween the struggling clubs.

Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 589th career homer and Adam Dunn andScott Hatteberg also homered for Cincinnati (46-64), whichsnapped a five-game losing streak and moved one-half game aheadof Pittsburgh (44-63) in the battle for the National League'sworst record.

Snell (7-10), who was 7-5 with a 2.93 ERA in the first half, dropped to 0-5 with an 8.31 ERA in the second half. Therighthander was tagged for six runs and a season high-tying 10hits in five innings.

Cincinnati did not wait long to jump on Snell, who has not wonsince July 4. Rookie Norris Hopper reached on a one-out singlein the first, advanced to second on a base hit by Griffey and tothird on a walk to Adam Dunn.

Jeff Keppinger then ripped a 2-1 pitch to left-center field fora double that plated the first two runs of the game. JavierValentin followed with an RBI single to right and EdwinEncarnacion became the sixth straight Red to reach when heplated Keppinger with a base hit to left for a 4-0 lead.

Encarnacion singled in the third and later scored on a base hit
by Alex Gonzalez, and Dunn made it 6-0 with a solo homer to
right field - his 29th of the season - in the fifth.

Keppinger drove in his third run in the sixth with an RBI singleto center that provided a 7-3 edge. The 27-year-old rookie is20-for-57 with 14 RBI in his last 15 games.

Hatteberg drilled a three-run shot in the seventh off JonahBayliss and, two batters later, Griffey belted a solo shot - his26th of the season. Alex Gonzalez belted his 15th homeragainst Bayliss in the ninth.

The support was enough for Belisle (6-8), who had lost hisprevious four decisions and was winless in his last 10 startsdating to May 29. The righthander surrendered three runs andnine hits in six frames to improve to 6-1 lifetime against thePirates.

Belisle is 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA in three starts againstPittsburgh this season and 3-8 with a 5.68 ERA in his other 18starts.

Ryan Doumit hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, who had won twostraight after losing 13 of 15.

"It's just one of those days," Griffey said. "You can't explainit. You just can't get too high on yourself when you're doingwell or too low yourself when your not doing well. You justhave to try stay as even as possible because it all works out.The most important thing is trying to get the 'W'."

Snell (7-10), who was 7-5 with a 2.93 ERA in the first half, dropped to 0-5 with an 8.31 ERA in the second half. Therighthander was tagged for six runs and a season high-tying 10hits in five innings.

"I really don't have nothing to say," Snell said. "At thispoint, it's kind of just like disgraceful, me to this team. Theway I've pitched this second half is just ridiculous. I havenobody to blame but myself. That's all I can really say."

"Those are fun games to play in and it helps the startingpitcher when we jump out to a 4-0 lead," Dunn said. "That'ssomething that we haven't been doing lately. We get on a teamearly and not put them away. It seems like everybody had greatat-bats from the first inning to the ninth inning. Our offenseis pretty good when we do that."

Encarnacion singled in the third and later scored on a base hitby Alex Gonzalez, and Dunn made it 6-0 with a solo homer toright field - his 29th of the season - in the fifth.

Keppinger drove in his third run in the sixth with an RBI singleto center that provided a 7-3 edge. The 27-year-old rookie is20-for-57 with 14 RBI in his last 15 games.

"I was swinging the bat well in Louisville," said Keppinger. "Itgot me feeling good. It got me locked in. It got me seeing theball well. I'm just putting the barrel on the ball and theyhappen to fall for me."

"I just think he's trying to make quality pitches," said Redsmanager Pete Mackanin. "It's not an easy thing do. It's likewhen you watch golfer's on TV, it looks so easy. And then whenyou get out there on the course, you find out how difficult itis. He made progress tonight."

Belisle is 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA in three starts againstPittsburgh this season and 3-8 with a 5.68 ERA in his other 18starts.

"I come in here and feel they same way I do against any team,"Belisle said. "It's nice for it to keep going, but I don'tattribute it to anything. I just come out here and have goodball games and I've just been fortunate to come out on the rightside so far."

Ryan Doumit hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, who had won twostraight after losing 13 of 15.

"There's no need in a 13-4 game to point the finger in any onedirection, that's for (darn) sure," Pirates manager Jim Tracysaid. "Tomorrow's another day."
