harley Oakley, one of the most beloved players ever to wear a Knicks uniform, believes there are plenty of teams that could use his toughness, leadership and defense.

He specifically mentioned the Knicks, Nets, Cavs and Mavs. "Look at how bad Cleveland was in the NBA Finals," said Oakley, proving his tongue is still as sharp as his elbows. "They had big guys who couldn't move and can't shoot. They never knocked Tony Parker on his butt.

"I'm not saying I'm better than guys who play every day. But I can play 20 minutes a night. I understand the game. I can shoot, make free throws and defend. A lot of teams don't have a general on the floor. I'm not trying to steal from anybody. Give me a tryout and if you don't think I can do it, then just cut me."

Since telling the Toronto Star last week about his plans to play again, Oakley claims that he's attracted the interest of several teams but declined to name any.

I'd love to have an Oakley type player on the team....but the actual thing? I don't know about that.

    No thanks.

I have too much hatred towards the Knicks to have one of "their" guys on the Nets.

Not worth a penny, now if he wants to play for free he's more than welcome.

If he is willing not to be payed much. i dont see why we shouldnt at least try him out at camp. He would add more depth to the frontcourt, and i doubt he would get ahead of Sean Williams in the rotation.

I doubt very much he can be as effective as he says he is, but if all he wants is a training camp invite, maybe some team will take a shot at him, I can't see the Nets doing it.

Haha that's a real great way to campaign for a job. Hey I could help you, you suck. 20 minutes a night is pretty hilarious too. Oakley is a suspension in the making for any team dumb enough to sign him.

I'd take him for the vet's min. I mean, we're talking our 12th man here. I doubt it'll happen though, considering his feuding with Carter in Toronto.

It would be nice to have someone on the team that would actually call Carter out when he takes plays off, though.

I wouldn't even take him for the min. We have enough big men, and I wouldn't want to risk anybody taking Sean's minutes. Unless Oakley feels like playing 2-guard I wouldn't want him in a Nets uni.

same here. stupid knicks. why did they have to trade for nichols?? damnit. stupid knicks.

oakley probably sucks right now, anyways. if the nets were to get a really old vet, i'd rather have it be shawn kemp, not that old crazy dude from the knicks.

Yeah, sure. Unless we go a small line up we're looking at 4 guys in the regular rotation: Krstic, Magloire, Boone, Collins. Garbage minutes + injuries = some time for Sean.

and i hope collins goes down for a few games, when we're not facing teams with good post players, so that sean could get a little burn.

Just imagine if the Nets had signed him last summer. Oak would have taken care of the Jeff McInnis problem.

He passed by Jeff McInnis, who was sitting on the bench, and socked him,'' Orange County Register reporter Art Thompson said. ``Jeff tried two or three times to get back at him, but players and coaches held him back.'' McInnis, who was waving a cup holder as was being held back, was not fined or suspended. Oakley sat out Friday night's game against the Clippers, and also will miss games in Utah on Tuesday and Portland on Wednesday. Los Angeles Clippers coach Alvin Gentry was satisfied with the suspension. ``It was a single hit,'' Gentry said. ``I just saw the aftermath of it, so who knows. We're not talking about the most mature group of people in the world when you talk about pro athletes, so it could have been over anything. We talked to the guys and said we don't want ever to retaliate, which is tough to do in certain situations.

Can we sign him to a 10 day contract when we play the Bobcats?
