He's kinda on the old side, but if he plays to his potential, I see him as another stackhouse type player.

Exactly. What I like about him the most is that he's quiet and never seems to complain. Wish every player was like that.

    edit: just like Duncan.

Sounds about right...he can still be a solid bench player at this point.

The Mavericks strengthened their depth at shooting guard and small forward Friday, agreeing to terms on a two-year deal with veteran swingman Eddie Jones.

Owner Mark Cuban confirmed the pending deal with the unrestricted free agent. Jones, 35, is expected to fly to Dallas on Monday where he'll take a physical and officially sign. He'll receive $1.83 million in the first year from the Mavericks' bi-annual exception.

The team still has its $5.3 million mid-level exception to use for another free-agent acquisition.

Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, declined comment until the deal is official.

Jones (6-6, 200 pounds) is a three-time All-Star who has averaged 15.4 points per game in 13 NBA seasons. Throughout his career, he's been considered an excellent outside shooter and defender.

Even though he averaged a career-low 7.7 points a game last season with Memphis and Miami, he showed that he could still deliver late in the season. When Miami lost star Dwyane Wade with a shoulder injury, Jones played a key stopgap role. He started all 15 Miami games in March with Wade sidelined, averaging 13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists. He shot 46.2 percent field, including 41 percent on 3-pointers, during that span.

With the Mavericks, he'll give the team another look at shooting guard and small forward to go with players like Jerry Stackhouse, Devean George, Greg Buckner and second-year guard Moe Ager.

What are your thoughts? Despite being 35, Jones is a good shooter and defender - I believe for the LLE it was a good pickup for the Mavs

    The beauty of this signing:

    A) We have another shooter on this team; a major flaw against GS was that Dirk didn't have shooters to pass to when he was doubled.

[IMG] Our depth just got a whole lot better. Suddenly, we have a guy who can start at the 2, back up the 2, and back up the 3.

    C) Bench scoring isn't a huge hole on our team anymore. Two seasons ago, we had Stack, Devin, KVH, and Queesy all coming off the bench, all averaging around 10 PPG. Obviously this doesn't bring our bench to that level, but it allows us to have a punch from the bench via Jones if he plays the 7th man role, or a HUGE punch from the bunch via JET if Jones takes over starting 2 duties and and JET backs up Devin from the pine, a la Ginobili. Our second best bench scorer is no longer Devean F-ing George.

    D) A guy who can still play a lick of defense.

    E) Veteran guy. Great locker room dude. High basketball IQ. Very consistent.

    F) Most importantly, WE DIDN'T TOUCH OUR MLE. I realize we all would have liked Pietrus, Barnes, or maybe even Pavlovic to fill this role in our roster, by (adequately) filling it with Jones by using the LLE instead, we still have our whole MLE to offer to a Chris Webber or PJ Brown.

Couldn't be happier with the signing. We still have a gaping hole in the frontcourt that I doubt Bass can fill (and I doubt Avery/Donnie feels Bass is capable of filling it), but that's another problem for another time. Coming into this offseason, I figured the Mavs would have 3 priorities, in this order: 1) A low post scorer. 2) A shooter. 3) A playmaker. #2's taken care of, and if we can land Brown or Webber, so is #1. And who knows - maybe Devin's improved enough to become #3, or maybe JJ can see more time this season to fill the playmaking role.

If you didn't get the point yet, my reaction to the signing is a big "HELL YEAH."
