Hey guys, DeRozan would be a sign and trade... you don't have to give anything close to equal value for a player in a sign and trade. So the Spurs would have to add value. That being said the guy doesn't shoot the three. With him and Nurk our floor spacing wouldn't be great. Our defense would and if that's where we wanted to hang out hat then maybe this is a smart target. I guess it would depend on what was coming with him.
I've gone through many DeRozan S&T scenarios. Unless he's taking a significant paycut to come to the BLAZERS (of all teams), there's almost no way it's possible with the hard cap. Especially now with the reports that Powell's figure may be even higher.
Have you looked at their numbers? Have you watched Gordon play and also have you watched him not play, the guy is never healthy. When healthy Gordon is not as good of a shooter as CJ... check the stats... he doesn't have CJ's handle and he just isn't as good but none of that matters because CJ has been durable and Gordon is one of the most injury prone players in the league. Oh and when Gordon wasn't he was highly valued. I feel like you made an off handed comment that you didn't expect people to check you on because Gordon's visibility to a passive fan has been obscured by his injuries but he's never had a season that was anything like what CJ puts up year in and year out. The seasons where he's had the efficiency of CJ he hasn't had the production and the rest of his career he hasn't shot close to as well as CJ.
I remember when CJ for Derozan like 4 years was talked about and everyone got crucified for saying that. They all thought CJ had more value. Pretty sure most here would do that deal in a second now.
i did look at stats and did know that CJ had the better stats. Gordon is a streaky shooter but can take over a game like CJ. When Harden was out and he started he played decent can get hot. Yep he’s been injured more for sure. Ive always felt CJ is a volume shooter which is what many two guards do but his D and lack of getting to the line like he should makes him an average overall guard in today’s league. Imo, levine is a notch netter than CJ
I'm sure 513 played at some point... But regardless, he was bad for large swaths of year but not that bad.
First of all as @B-Roy pointed out, any sign and trade would hard cap us. That being said I wouldn't do that deal. DeRozan can't shoot the ball and he doesn't have the upside or the elite other skills of a Simmons. He's a really good defender and he is good at getting to the hoop and he's a good passer but not elite. So I'd need something more back for him. It's a moot point though because we can't do a sign and trade with our cap situation.
Powell is worth like Jordan Clarkson type money, but he's going to get more than that unfortunately. Norm is a fine player, but his box score stats overrate him and isn't a great fit with us unless we get a creator at the three or the four, and even at that point I don't think we are some serious contender. I understand not wanting him to walk for nothing, but the biggest appeal for me bringing him back is having another large contract to trade down the line.
If that last sentence is that Zach LaVine is a notch better than CJ... I completely agree. The term volume shooter means a guy that gets his points by shooting a ton instead of making a high percentage of their shots. Since CJ makes a high percentage of his shots, he's not a volume shooter. I know he doesn't get to the line enough but despite not getting to the free throw line his efg% is right on par with guys like Harden because CJ is so accurate. So he's the exact opposite of a volume scorer.
I wasn't talking about this offseason. Mick kinda was. I wouldn't do that deal now since it will hard cap us as you said. I was just mentioning this was talked about 4 years ago and people were crucified on this board. If we could go back in time, we should have done that deal.
Here is a Derozan for CJ thread I found from years ago. Hilarious to read. http://www.sportstwo.com/threads/would-you-would-they-trade-offer-thread.287229/#post-3670682
Oh, I think the term ball hog is very fitting for CJ. I can't stand CJ on 5 or MeJ ball. That being said, teams like the Sixers and Knicks need a guy who wants to take over when perimeter scoring is needed.
I wonder if Norm has some more upside even at age 28. He's improved almost every year he's been in the league and we know he has an awesome work ethic. I think he could reach fringe-all-star status ie. Tobias Harris/Prime Rudy Gay/CJ McCollum types...
I think if CJ were traded, Norm would be seeing more touches than he ever has before and be back to guarding players his size. So while I don't know if he improves his game a ton at 28, he may be given the opportunity to shine in a way that puts him in the same light as a Prime Rudy Gay... I like that comp because Rudy was seen as a real two way player.
If this Norm thing doesn't go our way... I'm sorry but I'll be insufferable for many of you. I'm not telling you to put me on ignore now but if Norm walks for nothing, I will start advocating that we start the rebuild now and not wait for the league to know that Dame has requested the trade. Don't get me wrong if Dame wants to stay even though the roster is going the opposite way he just demanded it go, I'll still want him here. He's my favorite player of all time. I also think that if we could get a trade for Simmons done with CJ and a shitload of draft capital... a starting lineup of Dame, Ant, Simmons, RoCo and Boucher (acquired by trading Nurk) would be a good start to a team that would contend in a couple years if Simmons takes his game to the next level. That being said, if behind closed doors Dame says it looks like he'll want to be moved before next season, I would want to tear it all down and start over as soon as possible. Oh, I hope Norm re-signs with us... it's a big deal.
it's bad but not THAT dire. we get possibly the full MLE and get forced into trading for improvement.
I'm with you. Losing Norman is unacceptable. If we are going to start next season off worse, tear it down and bring on the ping pong balls.
