I had a stale hamburger bun there one time and that soured me on Red Robbin. My all time favorite was Gene and Joe's on McLoughlin Blvd near Milwaukee. It has morphed into Tebo's in Gladstone still on McLoughling Blvd. in Gladstone. Tebo's took Gene and Joe's and ruined it until I think they're now out of business. Idiots. No. 2 would have been the Carnival at the bottom of pill hill at one end of Terwilliger and on the intersection with one end of Sam Jackson Park Rd.
If you're talking local joints than give me Roakes on Columbia ... total grease joint but so delicious and can get some massive burgers.
First of all, Ted and Bob didn’t “ruin” Gene and Joe’s. They took it and made it way better. They built a new, spacious and modern building. They knew pretty much each and every customer by name. From the mid seventies well through the nineties the place was always busy, often with a line out the door. When Ted and Bob sold the business to John and Craig, they (T&B) kept the actual property. The food was always consistent to Gene & Joe’s/Ted & Bob’s standards (like them or don’t), especially the burgers. The only problem that I ever saw (and I can assure you that I ate there FAR more often than you…..and know the history at least as well….and apparently better) is that they refused to change their business model. They kept what Gene and Joe started, and Ted and Bob perfected and kept it static. It was a both a family establishment and a haven for blue hairs. It was the kind of place that mostly disappeared in the ‘60’s. And that was part of the problem. The blue hairs were dying off….and the folks who grew up eating there as kids moved onto “newer” and more trendier places. They saw Tebo’s as “an old folks place”. And business started dropping off. It’s very unfair to call Craig and John idiots when they worked their asses off to turn the tide. Those guys worked there from the time they were in high school and put their lives into the place. It wasn’t their fault when Ted and Bob’s heirs received an offer for the property that they could not refuse. Money talks. Just because you patronized the place back in the day does not make you an expert on their history……you do not EVER want to get into and argument with my wife or my sister in law about the history and evolution of Tebo’s (originally The Cheese Wedge). You’d slink away with your tale between your legs……….and it’s still my favorite burger of all time.

I've only eaten at Tebo's about three times while I ate at Gene and Joe's when I was very young so I can't remember how many times I ate there but it was plenty and sufficient enough for me to compare with Tebo's. 1. Gene and Joe's condiments bar was far far superior to Tebo's; 2. the restaurant may be bigger and nicer and the service is almost as good but the food is so far downhill that they've gone out of business.Seems to reason that something went wrong or they'd still be in business. 3. Tebo's catered to the older people who needed softer food. Tebo's deserts were still good. 4. Gene and Joe's had a best waitress contest where they took all the customer's comments for a year on who their favorite waitress was and used that to award a brand new red Corvette which they displayed throughout the year in the middle of the dining section. 5. I loved Gene and Joe's as child but disliked Tebo's, as an adult why is that? My wife and I took friends there and they didn't like the joint either. My wife? After looking at the food she refused to eat there. Please, no more dick measuring and comparing.

Calling hard working, dedicated and good people “idiots” because they don’t meet your “exacting” (from back in the mists of time) standards is just plain rude and disrespectful. Especially when you only vaguely know the history. So you didn’t like Tebo’s. Big deal. Some of the restaurants you wax so eloquently about I personally wouldn’t treat my worst enemy to. Such is my right. But unless they do something so egregious as to deserve the term “idiots”, I just choose let my wallet do the talking, rather than debase the individuals involved.
I don't know the history of the place, just know that we started going there in the early/mid 90's and I'm pretty sure it was already Tebo's and I enjoyed it. The deserts were the best part but the food, especially for a cafeteria style restaurant, was way better than other similar places I've been to. My parents still went until the day it closed and we had many family meals with aunts/uncles/cousins there through the years. Sad it's gone but tough to argue with a big chunk of cash to sell the property.

Right here my neighborhood we have Killer Burger and Stanich’s……. Both amazing! You guys ever tried Super Deluxe???? They make a damn good burger!

Some places they're more. Bonnie's burgers around Portland used to be 19 cents. I remember when you could get four small hamburgers, four small cokes and four small french fries for one dollar and get change from McDonald's. Sometimes it pays to be old even if just for the memories.
Wasn't impressed with the Killer Burger either. One thing I used to love about Gene and Joe's was all the fire licking up past the grill and grilling the bottom of the hamburgers. Same thing for the old Dairy Queen burgers and the Bob's Big Boy burgers and, oh yes, the Carnival burger.
Red Robin is good Burgerville is good In-N-Out is good Five Guys is alright Killer Burger is alright I had a bison burger at a restaurant in Montana which was one of the best burgers I’ve had.
Never been there before but I’ve seen it in Beaverton/Hillsboro and want to try it! Just be glad they’ve got Buffalo in Montana and not felines.
