I'm pretty sure Milwaukee is the defending champion. In the past ten years Milwaukee, Toronto and Cleveland have won it from small markets and both San Antonio and OKC have made it to the finals. The Knicks haven't won it in forever. I really think it comes down to how you manage your franchise.

Milwaukee and Toronto got titles by taking big risks with swing-for-the-fences trades; Cleveland got theirs because Lebron returned home; OKC made it by right-place-right-time draft picks helped by Portland sinking with the Oden pick. And the Spurs completed the most successful 1 year tank job in the history of sports

being smart and lucky at the same time is a great formula

I still think we have a great chance at being successful. There may be inherent advantages for some teams but the only ones that have any data to back it up are the Celtics and Lakers.

San Antonio didn’t just make it to the finals (twice!). They won the whole thing (2014).

    ok...maybe

you just mentioned 5 'small market' teams either winning the finals or getting there (OKC). And I was pointing out how they achieved their success. Milwaukee and Toronto took the step into contention by taking the risk of swinging-for-the-fence; Cleveland had a top-5 player all-time as a home-town guy; OKC had 3 straight top-4 picks; and the Spurs had the #1 pick at the most perfect time

Blazers don't have an all-world home town boy; they won't have any top-3 picks (not in the Dame era); and their GM is the exact opposite of a swing-for-the-fences GM. None of those formulas appear available to Portland with current management and ownership in place

Nope! I've boycotted every Finals that the Fakers & Basston played in. So i will watch those teams ONLY, when they play Our Boyz.

I'm old enough to remember when people insisted that we messed up by not drafting Drummond over Lillard. I used to fight them hard about this, talking about changing NBA and Lillard's killer mentality and polished skills. Seems like a million years ago now and also silly.

I think the thinking was that we could then snag Lillard at 11 (10?)

Might have been the thinking but categorically untrue.

Naw, people thought Drummond was an absolute Beast and Lillard was a SG forced to play PG. They also didn't realize how much the game was about to shift, right around when Lillard came in the league. I had arguments here and on Blazersedge (May it rest in shame) with folks absolutely certain we boned that draft when we didn't take Drummond.

I remember a lot of people bummed we didn't take Harrison Barnes. He was supposed to be a can't miss guy.
