I voted other - keep open for luxury tax.

Well yes if no trades happen.

But having less players makes it easier to do a small trade by February to get just under the tax. If the Blazers sign a 14th and 15th player now a trade to sneak under the tax later is more difficult.

i meant the tax bill would be greater, and make it more difficult to duck under come trade deadline like he has done in the past. Did he go into 18/19 season with a full roster at the beginning?

Flexibility from the context of being able to do an imbalanced trade without other roster machinations. Signing Chriss AND Smith now would mean one would have to be dumped (presumably using an incentive) if we were to trade someone in a 1 for 2 or 2 for 3 deal.

Still also don't see the utility. Maybe if it were a budding prospect with potential, it would make sense to keep on as a practice body, but guys mid-career like Smith/Chriss? I'm not seeing the advantage of it. Can always sign them later in case of injury anyway.

Everything I've read lists minimum roster size as 13 players... So I don't believe the team will sign anyone now outside a second two way player.

Once the team gets under the tax in a trade or goes past the trade deadline staying over the tax they will then look to sign 14th and possibly 15th players.

    yeah, he did.

Depth is good. Nurk, Zeller, and Nance all have injury issues, as most bigs do, so having a guy like Chriss makes sense. We’re also used to not worrying about point guards because CJ ran the second unit and we had Simons. That setup looks like it’s changing under Billups so having insurance or even competition for Simons makes sense.

Both those guys are better than the typical players the blazers invite to camp. Tbh I don’t think either one comes to Portland unless they’ve got a good shot at making the team.

If the Blazers could sign Milsap, or LaMarcus, or Kevin Love level of player with the 14th spot on a vet minimum contract you do it and risk staying in the luxury tax.

Chriss and Smith Jr wouldn't be in the rotation at all right now nor project to help in the playoffs so I don't believe the team would risk luxury tax to sign those guys. Maybe if they are amazing in training camp that changes.

the blazers are already in the tax. And btw a team can’t carry 13 players for more than a week or two.

Marc Gasol might become available this week with LA taking on Jordan. I know Olshey was apparently in pursuit of him in the past. I'd like him more than either Smith/Chriss as a veteran voice who can play spot minutes as needed.

I dunno--I see value in a guy like Chriss as a potentially higher-ceiling alternative to Zeller. And if Simons continues to be ineffective at PG, having a guy like Smith as an alternative makes a lot of sense.

I agree that it's unlikely that both are brought in, but I definitely see a reason and certainly wouldn't be opposed.

Love, if buyout happens, makes the most sense. Gasol is done. Love still has an ability to make an impact. Sure, didn't look his best at the Olympic workouts, but others struggled as well. Gasol really looks done.

Gasol really got exposed in that suns series, he really can’t move anymore. We just got rid of a defensive liability, let’s not try and bring another one in (and I’m strictly talking about present day Gasol, I know he used to be good)

The tax isn't calculated now its at the end of the season, so its not certain the Blazers will be in the tax when the season is over. Signing more players now, even for the minimum, makes it potentially more difficult to maneuver under the tax.

I thought teams could only have 12 players for short periods of time.

Where did you hear the minimum roster size is 14? Larry Coon CBA FAQ talks about 12 salary slots plus the player being signed (13 total salaries)

Wikipedia says "individual teams must carry a minimum of 13 (12 active plus one inactive) players"

What are you using to evaluate Chriss to be anything more than a scrub big? I don't see him being better than Giles/Skal, much less Zeller (dude was making 15 mil as a pseudo starter the past four years). There's a reason Chriss hasn't stuck in the NBA and guys like him are a dime a dozen. I think bringing him to training camp was nothing more than a favor to Aaron Goodwin.

Seemed like he had a pretty decent year for GSW in 19/20. I assume his ceiling would be higher than his performance in that season.

    What's wrong with that?
Either Ennis or Hartstein would be great pickups.

And yet Zeller was signed on Day 1 of free agency, while Chriss is out search for training camp invites. Let's see if he sticks or has to go to the Balkans for this season.

    Lol?
