Cities need rehab facilities for meth and heroin addicts....should be a requirement for public housing to pass a piss test just like people have to to get a job...fail the test you get rehab housing...not public housing...incentive..and Holland has had legal drugs for ages with less crime than we have jailing drug users.....legalizing it also brings down the cost for those who don't quit using and less cost means less desperation to get a fix...mental illness should also be dealt with with rehab centers...first step in dealing with mental illness is to get the meth out of the equation or the alcohol..etc...the transition to implement new approaches will take time and not show immediate results...still we should address the problem from several angles...passing one law won't solve the problem....getting clean and sober is where you start

We used to wake up to "It's Raining Tacos" before school. Still do sometimes. My kids absolutely love tacos...

Yes, we certainly need to focus more on rehab centers. The problem is you can't force them to get tested. And they'll be afraid to get tested because they don't want to go to jail. Sure, if you catch one breaking the law you can push them through the system.

My personal opinion is that it is going to take a complete change in the way we deal with them, from requiring them to do stuff, to just helping them and offering services. If most of them were interested in meeting requirements and jumping through hoops we wouldn't be in this situation.

But again, by all means, if police catch a junkie breaking the law go ahead and arrest them and put them in jail (at least until a rehab space is available). Then start moving them through the system as they recover until you get them into public housing with a caseworker.

Yeah, I watched the whole thing. It was great.

No doubt. We'll have to get creative. We have huge vacant buildings which could be torn down and replaced with container units (of which we have a huge excess).

There are other solutions as well, we just have to be willing to apply them.

We shouldn't be in the business of torturing people. We're spending so much more by keeping it dirty and miserable than we would by cleaning it up. Helping the people is an awesome extra bonus.

The lost revenue this city is seeing because we're unwilling to solve the problem is disgraceful. Everything about this is disgraceful.

Why not line up the water front (Front Avenue Park) with Homeless Housing or Terminal Two. Either mobile homes or module homes. Or build a city for them on Ross Island with bridge.

I think many people would think the bridge was a bridge too far.

Ok, a tunnel under the river? Or another within budget ski lift?

Ideally they aren't all in the same place. That's how you get slums. Best to spread them out as much as possible.

But yeah, there are spaces you could put them. And if you did put them all in one are a (like that big lot below 405) you could run bus service there and police it heavily to hopefully prevent the slums. You could stack tens of thousands of container units down there as low income housing and the people paying rent would subsidize those who couldn't afford it.

Make rent no more than 30% of your income.

You'd have incentive to move out ASAP but you'd also have privacy.

Only if you put them on an island... Otherwise they'd just come back. Most are from Portland. It's what's familiar to them.

How do you know that? There have been articles about other cities bussing the homeless and the mentally ill to Portland and San Francisco.

There's a few absolutely wild encampments on the onramps. Last night a guy ran out in front my car without fear.
