Bummer, dude. https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/steve-harvey-cancel-culture-killed-comedy-1235151564/ Steve Harvey Slams ‘Cancel Culture’ and Says ‘Political Correctness Has Killed Comedy’ "Every joke you tell now, it hurts somebody’s feelings," Harvey said. Steve Harvey slammed cancel culture at the Television Critics Association press tour while promoting his new ABC daytime courtroom series “Judge Steve Harvey.” The television host said that it would be impossible for him to do a comedy special in today’s climate because “cancel culture” could cost him his courtroom show and his career. “The only way I can do one more special is if it’s at the end of my television career because it will end my television career,” Harvey said. “We’re in the cancel culture now. No stand-up that is sponsor-driven can say anything he wants to. Chris Rock can’t. Kevin Hart can’t. Cedric the Entertainer can’t. D.L. Hughley can’t. I can go down the list. The only person that can say what they want to say on stage is Dave Chappelle because he’s not sponsor-driven. He’s subscription-driven.”....... (CONTINUED)
I highly admire Steve Harvey. For a Black man once being homeless, he's come a long, long way. https://www.essence.com/news/steve-harvey-homeless-during-his-early-career/
Love Steve Harvey and hard to argue with him. Seinfeld said years ago that he'd never go to a college campus because of this and now these college kids are full grown adults. I keep waiting for the pendulum to swing the other way on this but it's not happening.
I really think some of the greatest comics of our generation are having a rough time with this trend....when inappropriate behavior is used to make fun of humanity it's comedy....when they get serious about this shit it's usually personal power of politics....cancel all the politicians and couch casters but please....let the court jesters make fun of everybody...and I mean everybody. ...there's a reason guys like Eddie Murphy stayed out of the game for so long after watching Louis CK or Aziz Ansari lose careers and have their movies blacklisted....Don Rickles wouldn't have a career if he were starting out today. Great comics use themselves as the butt of most of their jokes anyway.
Sly if I can't pull out my penis in my own home, where the hell am I supposed to pull out my penis!@?!?!!?! (technically I think it was in a hotel room, but the point still stands!)
I know.......I used him as an example of why comics feared going public in the modern day for being exposed as stars who had taken advantage of being stars ...Louis had one incident with two friends of his and didn't repeat it like Cosby or Weinstein....came out immediately and owned his bad behavior and apologized ....he even asked the two ladies before he practiced his exhibition fantasies in front of them which I'm sure they found creepy...they were comedy writers though and Louis took it too far....Aziz Ansari had the most frightening cancel culture situation from sleeping with a groupie who he thought enjoyed the encounter only to turn on him after consensual sex....that one was unusual....both comedians lost careers over it......I'd say Eddie Murphy probably has ghosts in the closet as do the members of a thousand rock stars like Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith etc.......to the topic...I think comedians got a bigger microscope than Rock Stars or Celebrities did in the cancel culture world. Cosby actually is a serial rapist....Weinstein is a serial rapist. Louis was an exhibitionist and Aziz just had a bad date....cancel culture is important but can unfortunately be very selective
I've only seen Steve Harvey in a movie with Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor once..also saw him host some comedy showcases ..don't know anything about his TV career but sounds like he's bright enough to not let his defenses down in light of the risks that would entail in today's court of opinion.
I was only aware of the one incident....at any rate...he ruined his career over his fetish....which is probably a factor in Steve Harvey deciding not to do standup specials and risk his own career. That link has a paywall so I could only read the headline.....I heard his two friends talk about it on an interview and neither thought he should lose a career over it but that he should get help, which he went out and did.....Louis handled the accusations with an immediate reply of guilt....he said he absolutely was guilty of abusing his position and too dumb to know it at the time.....I respect not what Louis did but how he handled it afterwards...Aziz also came clean and seemed at least to me to have a heartfelt reaction to his situation....never felt that about Cosby or Weinstein though...and both of them remain in denial about their roles to the day. Any musician who's gotten off stage at 1 am and had too much to drink ending in a one night stand with a stranger could relate to how easily that could turn on you the next day.....
Louis C.K.’s new ‘Sorry’ special proves ‘cancel culture isn’t real https://nypost.com/2021/12/20/louis-c-k-s-sorry-special-cancel-culture-doesnt-exist/
He worked in Europe after he left the states and married a Polish woman but the movie he made with the oscar buzz at the time was cancelled as well as his TV sitcom with Alan Alda which was a big hit.....he left the country and lost millions over his masturbation episode.....if you've followed Louis' career..he has joked about being the world's best masturbator for his entire career.....welp...that joke didn't end well for him......I hope his career revives because he's really a funny comedian.
Do you feel Louis CK and Aziz Ansari should have been cancelled and remain cancelled over these episodes? I've watched Louis' standup since the episode and he's really still one of the most gifted comics out there.....Aziz has gone back to writing shows and not acting so much these days...his follow up special was actually pretty sad and not very funny at all...I think it crushed him
