    Sounds like you are deep in your own credit card miles game but I've always found an Alaska card to be worth the money if you live in one of the West Coast hubs. The card is cheap, the companion ticket is awesome for Mexico trip especially (lots of direct flights from PDX to Mexico), they have a great partner network, and you get lounge access for $25 as a card holder.

    We actually did consider going to the ruins in Palenque and then going down the Sumidero Canyon, which is considered more spectacular than our Grand Canyon but the political unrest in Chiapas made it not safe for a driving-based trip like we are doing in the Yucatan.

    Wow. Incredible. We got engaged in Tulum 30 years ago, back when you could stay in a palapa on the beach for $20. Last time we went down there we went to Coba and it was great.

    Back when we first went, we went to Palenque. Hottest, most humid place I have ever been, but walking among the ruinas was incredible.

    Has anyone else ever been to San Cristobal De Las Casas in the Chiapas mountains? Magical place.
