UCD and I (and my daughter and niece) are headed to the Big Island for three weeks in June. Coming back through SF for a Giants ballgame before returning home. Should be a good time.
We did a Yosemite/Sequoias road trip a couple of years ago. We stayed in SF a couple of nights. I must admit. we really enjoyed staying on Hill St. and checking out the Mission District.
Went to Palm Desert/Palm Springs yesterday for a day trip. Lots of Oregon plates. Maybe snowbirds living in the desert.
I used to go maybe every 2 years. Now it seems too fucked up with attacks on asians, strong arm robbery, etc. And that's not even the homeless crackhead shitting on the street. Same reason I don't really care to go to NY either. Still wanna do a Monterey trip from San Jose though. We had one we cancelled right when the pandemic started
Wife wants to hit up some east coast cities this summer, thinking DC, NY and Boston but still trying to finalize plans. We are thinking 3 nights in each, not sure it's enough but at least a good taste of what those cities are like. I've been to each before (she hasn't) but it was probably 15 years ago now.
Recently hung out with what would qualify as an Austin “celebrity”. As much as he loves it, and it still likely qualifies as the best place to visit in Texas, even he is over it and ready to leave (which is a complete 180 from our convos from a decade ago).
I went during the pandemic. A lot of things were semi-closed, so probably not the best judge of things, but its a small city. Kinda a Portland vibe in a way. Great BBQ and Mexican food. Not a WHOLE lot of stuff to do, you can go on the lake, get BBQ, etc. Bar culture, etc. We did a day trip to San Antonio too, which you should probably do if you go there. For Austin, I enjoyed grabbing happy hour at The Oasis, which overlooked Lake Travis. Its a bit out there but great view and vibe. Definitely hit up some BBQ joints (I went to La Barbeque which was great). Do the boat tour which goes under the bridges to see the bats at night. That was pretty cool.
Do NY, Boston, Philly and Atlantic City/Jersey Shore! I wanted to hit up the Jersey Shore this summer, but probably not. Wanna go to Philly to do a cheesesteak tour.
Thanks! All look like great stuff to do! Yeah, we were considering checking out San Antonio, as well, so thanks for the tip!
Philly's awesome. Great walking town! So many dogs! LOL Rittenhouse Square is cool. So is the Liberty Bell tour.
San Antonio rocked. Much more pleasant and less frenetic than Austin. Whoever came up with the Riverwalk (both as a destination and as a form of flood control) is a frickin’ genius. Plenty to see and do in SA proper, but there’s actually no real reason to ever leave the Riverwalk. Would love to take my wife there but until Texas fixes it’s fucked up politics…….no way.
It's been over a decade but my work used to send me to Austin all the time, for weeks on end. I even got a free SXSW out of it once. Great city, lots of fun but mostly just live music, good bars and great BBQ fun. Our favorite BBQ spot was the Salt Lick, it's about an hour a drive out of town but a fun trip.
I've been to San Antonio a couple of times, but never been to Austin. I saw the Beavs play the Longhorns in the Alamo Bowl back in 2012 I believe. Had a great time. Beavs lost a close game, but I still had fun.
Historic Market Square was a really cool area too. Like a Mexican Village. https://www.marketsquaresa.com/
