LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Robbie Gould was summoned from his construction job to fill in for injured kicker Doug Brien Sunday in Cleveland, but the Bears view the rookie as more than just a temporary replacement. The team on Wednesday released Brien, who missed three of four field goal attempts in three games before injuring his back in practice, and anointed Gould as their new kicker. Bears rookie Robbie Gould boots a 44-yard field goal Sunday in Cleveland on his first NFL kick. "It's a great opportunity because as a rookie you're looking for a break," Gould said. "Just a couple of days ago I was sitting at home and I didn't have a (NFL) job. Now here I am sitting in front of all you (reporters) and kicking in front of 70,000 fans. "Beforehand, no one really knew about me. Now all of a sudden Robbie Gould's kind of on the map and has started a little bit of his trek down hopefully what is a great NFL career." The Bears filled Brien's roster spot by re-signing offensive lineman Steve Edwards. The 6-5, 330-pounder was waived by Chicago Sept. 4 after appearing in 31 games with 23 starts the previous two seasons. In 2004, Edwards started two games at left guard and six at right guard including the final five contests after Ruben Brown was lost for the season with a neck injury. Gould made his NFL debut against the Browns, drilling a 44-yard field goal into the wind on his first pro kick and showing good hang time on three kickoffs. The 24-year-old later missed a 48-yard field goal attempt wide left, but impressed Bears coaches and management enough to land the job. Gould will kick in a game at Soldier Field for the first time Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, ironically matched up against Paul Edinger, who spent his first five seasons with the Bears before being released in May. "I've heard it's pretty windy out there," Gould said. "I'm hoping it's not too windy come Sunday, but you never know. Hopefully we'll get a chance to go out there and kick beforehand and really just have some fun. That's all I'm looking to do." Gould is accustomed to kicking in the elements. He grew up in Lock Haven, Pa., and played four seasons at Penn State. "I kicked in the Big Ten, so I've definitely kicked in the worst of conditions and I've kicked in the best of conditions," he said. "The cold weather, the wind, the rain-it's really not a big deal for me." Gould admitted that he was a bit nervous at the start of Sunday's game in Cleveland, but that anxiety subsided quickly. He realizes that the pressure on kickers is different than at any other position and just tries to remain calm regardless of the situation. "You've just got to go out there and realize that it is unique and as a kicker I've done it now for seven years," he said. "It's just like kicking anywhere else. It's like kicking in your backyard, at Penn State, or just working out at practice. You've just got to go out there and realize it's just like practice and just have fun." Gould signed with the Bears Saturday after outperforming four other free agent kickers Friday at Halas Hall. He was especially strong on kickoffs, booming a few six yards deep in the end zone. "You take a lot of pride in that," Gould said. "There aren't many touchbacks in this league. To have distance and a great coverage team and start inside the 20, it can change the momentum of the game. It's definitely something as a kicker I think everyone across the league prides themselves in." Gould entered the NFL in April as an undrafted free agent with the Patriots. The 6-1, 181-pounder from Penn State kicked one extra point in the preseason but did not attempt a field goal before being waived by New England on Aug. 30. Gould was signed to the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad on Sept. 7, but was waived Sept. 28. He was working for a constuction company owned by a family friend when the Bears called last week. Gould finished his college career as Penn State's fifth all-time leading scorer with 232 points, but he converted just 63.9 percent of his field goal attempts (39 of 61) in four seasons. As a senior, Gould made 7 of 13 field goal attempts (53.8 percent) while registering 23 touchbacks on 41 kickoffs. In other news Wednesday, running back Thomas Jones (knee), left tackle John Tait (ankle) and left guard Ruben Brown (pectoral) all were held out of practice and listed as questionable on the injury report, meaning there's a 50/50 chance they'll play against the Vikings. Defensive end Adewale Ogunleye (ankle) also did not practice and is listed as probable, meaning there's a 75 percent chance he'll play Sunday.
Doug Brien got cut for some undrafted Free Agent. Im sorry, but as a Jets fan and last postseason, I hope he never makes another NFL Kick
This is a kick in the face to Angelo. Serves you right! Edinger is an above average kicker. He will be a big part of the Vikings this year.
