Mariupol on the brink of falling into Russian hands as Moscow's ministry of defence claims it has taken control of the city's port and 1,000 Ukrainian marines 'surrender'
    • Mariupol has been surrounded for the majority of Russia's seven-week invasion
    • Large areas have been reduced to rubble by unrelenting aerial bombardment
    • Pockets of Ukrainian soldiers have been holding out, resisting Putin's forces
    • However, Russia claimed on Wednesday that more than 1,000 surrendered
    • Moscow also said it had captured the city's port, a key strategic target

This happened several hours ago but not on USA media. Ukraine has struck the russian flagship missile battleship Moskva with two Ukrainian made Neptune missles. The ammunition on the ship has been ignited and the ship is on fire, the crew is evacuating. This is a great military victory. russia may have to withdraw all their ships to the southern part of the Black Sea, making them ineffectual. This is confirmed by Tass. How violent will be Putler's angry response??

As a father and grandfather, I am terrified of this conflict escalating. OTOH, I have no patience with teachers who ignore the schoolyard bully, then flip their shit when the victim fights back.

Violence should be the last resort - but avoiding violence at all costs is ethically bankrupt. This conflict is going to expand - the only question is whether it happens now or after Ukraine is sacrificed.

Fuck. We have spent the last 70 years lavishing military aid on the most vile, vicious dictators imaginable, but when given the chance to help an innocent victim we dither.

Marine Le Pen to withdraw France from NATO’s unified military command if she wins
    April 13, 2022Ngozi Aima
“I want France to leave NATO’s unified military command. I will never agree that our troops are subordinate to the NATO command or the European command. France should return to the status in the alliance that it had from 1966 to 2009,” the French presidential candidate said.

National Rally candidate Marine Le Pen has said that if she wins the presidential election, she will withdraw France from NATO’s unified military command.

Le Pen said that if she is elected, she intends to offer NATO a strategic rapprochement with Russia after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.

“When hostilities are over, I will propose a strategic rapprochement between NATO and Russia,” Le Pen said.

She added that the key principles of her foreign policy will be “independence, equidistance and constancy.”

A Russian bank gave Marine Le Pen’s party a loan. Then weird things began happening.

It's painfully obvious we should be ramping up nuclear power generation in every country, using mechanical energy storage to handle peak demand wherever possible.

It's painfully obvious, but it won't happen for likely a decade.

If even then. Fossil fuel companies have done an amazing job of tricking people into thinking solar and wind are great (because you'll still need fossil fuel for peaks).

If we'd have just kept up with nuclear we'd be so much further ahead...

I agree. I also believe that liberals are the ones primarily responsible for our country not keeping up with nuclear development.

I'm going to disagree there. Over dependence on any one source is a bad idea.

Why? Were liberals the only ones to see that the reality of nuclear power had not kept up with the hype?

To work, you have to have a system that guarantees that plants are designed, built, and operated safely. You also need to do the same with disposal of the waste. There is ZERO room for compromise, cutting corners, or putting profit before safety. The risks involved are too serious to be ignored.
