I went back and read the article and it made me remember Poor Richard's Almanac published by Ben Franklin....Franklin said he had his staff work from 4AM to 10 AM every morning and they got more accomplished than papers hiring full time workers because the workers had incentive to get the paper out and not to milk the time for a wage and that they weren't tired at work. Franklin said because of this his employees could study many things and develop hobbies and skills such as farming and animal husbandry to enrich their lives thus being happier, better workers. That was written hundreds of years ago..similar idea. Franklin also believed the brain functioned at it's peak between 4AM and 10 AM and after those hours was too fatigued to retain or research information efficiently

I apologize. I did say that it sounds amazing! Next time I will be sure to cite the stats and points of the story. I will update the OP as well.

I am not aware of the details, as they were not spelled out in the article, but it did say that it took some serious planning and teamwork with the companies thinking outside the backs to make it work for all involved. I would think, if your company were to participate, they would need to make some adjustments, but would want to do so based on the premise of no loss in production due to healthier/happier labor force?

I know i can run a mile in short bursts much faster than in one continual jog.

    Hello,

I do not believe that would be how it works. No one employee opens a restaurant and then closes it do they? Well I did when I managed but only in an emergency situation.
I believe it would just require some restructuring of shifts for companies that are open 24/7?

No, but an employee would still have to have 100% from their 80% work week

You don't get it, in my job, it's not like I can work 30 hours and get paid for 40. There is no way to do it, because my job is 100% dependent on me working hours to get paid. There is no lee-way here.

I would love 4. And I would love even more Tuesday - Friday. Mondays can fuck right off. I might actually enjoy and relax on a Sunday for once in my life.

    I work M-T, Th-Sat.

I havent had a 2 day weekend in years (I'm not complaining, just saying what is the case). I honestly think I'd go stir crazy if i had 2 days off in a row, as when I am sick (or can't work for other reasons) I really get antsy.

Who cares. I haven’t worked 9-5 M-F in 23 years. In fact people that say TGIF make me physically ill.

Couldn't you just up your hourly rate enough to offset the difference?

Per the article I linked, the first trial showed that workers are able to do just that.

I am messing up these quotes! Anyhow I was just about to say just this.

I remember you sweatin' that freedom when covid hit too bro.....price of freelancing. I've pretty much always had multiple gigs and a day job...got divorced in Calif and they take you to the cleaners there....took 28 years to get that mistake paid off. Still managed to build a home and get ahead and got a fresh start but it was damned hard work for a long stretch of my youth. I only worked 24 hours a week after retiring from the school district. Now I sincerely hope you get back to work and start paying for my social security income because I haven't had to work in 6 years now....it's awesome! My retirement worked out well when covid hit...

I apologize, I am unfamiliar with an hourly salary. Can you explain how it does work?
I have never heard of an hourly salary before.

Why not? You raise your rate and make the same money in 32 hours that you would have made in 40 hours.

    What mechanism prevents this?
