SAN DIEGO (Nov. 3, 2005) -- Mike Scifres agreed to a four-year contract extension through 2011 that his agent said makes him the NFL's highest-paid punter. Scifres' current deal was due to expire following the 2007 season. Scifres is in his third NFL season and ranks sixth in the NFL with a 39.1-yard net average. Last year, he was a first alternate to the AFC Pro Bowl squad after finishing the season ranked third in the NFL with a 38.4-yard net average. While agent Harold Lewis claimed the deal makes Scifres the league's highest-paid punter, he wouldn't provide specifics. "This puts him in a very special class," Lewis said. "I think the thing Mike's happiest about is the commitment the Chargers shared this early in the contract when they didn't have to do that." The Chargers have extended the deals of several players. "We just think he's an extremely talented guy, and we'd like to have him part of the future," general manager A.J. Smith said. "I'm thrilled. He's one of the most talented punters I've seen." Smith wouldn't divulge figures, either. "We don't discuss our football business," Smith said.

He's good but he's not THAT good, geesh. More like the NFL's most OVER PAID punter. He's young though so it's good to stick with one guy on special teams for a long time. I hate when teams go from kicker to kicker every year, so it's good to see that he is sticking with the same team for a while.
