Those are different playoffs; the WCF team beat the Thunder and Nuggets.

Now if your point is the clippers series lead to overpaying 2016 free agents then fine I agree. But that has nothing to do with the post you replied to.

Bones point still stands of being stuck with Randle as the key addition to the roster. The Blazers cant do the NY trade at the draft with expectations the roster later gets completed with a follow up free agent sign and trade returning a needed complimentary starter.

Nurkic is a free agent; so he can't be traded away at the draft.

The OP needs to eliminate one of the options in the poll that reads "Include #7 with Nurk (S&T) for Ayton"

Nurkic is a free agent; so he can't be traded away at the draft.

    Additionally;

Ayton is a free agent; so he can't be traded away at the draft.

How is Randle a terrible fit? A guy who can attack the rack like that with Dame seems like he would be a dream...

Is it really that tough to conceive that he meant "the player drafted at #7" rather than the pick itself?

The issue with that is Phoenix would have to randomly value the same player that we do at 7. Deals like that basically never happen because of the obvious tampering in drafting for a team and talking sign and trade during the draft.

The Trail Blazers have been fielding offers for this pick from a number of teams, according to sources. There’s a distinct possibility they will move it. Whether they hold on to it or not, Sharpe is a potential target here as an explosive scorer who is comfortable using an array of moves to get into his stepback 3-pointer. Though he’s raw as a playmaker, Damian Lillard or Anfernee Simons would be running the show in Portland. Putting in a more consistent effort on defense will be a big key to success for Sharpe. But he has shown enough flashes of grit and unselfishness to make it clear he has the qualities of a potential star.

Or we just ask them who they want us to take and we take them.

Or we would have to inquire of Phoenix who they'd want at that spot and then say "yeah, even if the deal doesn't happen, we're good with this guy".

    Yes, unlikely, but not impossible

And if we don't want that person for ourself and the deal falls through?
Yes, it's technically possible, it just never ever happens, so it's not really worth exploring.

If we're trading the pick it's going to happen on the day while we're on the clock. Once other teams know which players are actually available, we'll be able to squeeze a bit more value from teams that are targeting a specific player that is there at 7.

But I also feel like trading it pre-maturely would be such a Cronin thing to do....

Trading it prematurely would only really be the way to go if it's a stepping-stone move to setup another one. Case in point -- if we really are trying to get up to 2 or 3 to get Paulo -- moving up to, say 5, ahead of time would be beneficial.

I suppose another benefit could be -- and we're so close now that this is just mostly theoretical -- getting a player to shutdown workouts with a promise (but a promise at, like, 11 or 15, or wherever we're trading back to, not 7...)

But yes, beyond those, makes no sense to make a move until we know what the final offers look like compared to the draft opportunities...

If OKC somehow shakes it up and takes Ivey 2 (who honestly would be a great fit for them), I want us to get up to 4 and hope and pray Houston takes Chet allowing Paolo to drop.

I asked Fischer yesterday if there was any likelihood of Portland moving up in the draft and he shut it down pretty quickly. But if Paolo or even Chet (meh) drops, I want us to at least explore that option. 7+ Mil pick + Hart for 4 would be sweet.

We have to wait until the player is picked to move it, unless it's a trade down.

Would much rather trade 7 and change for the rights to Paolo than to trade it for an established vet who has a much lower ceiling.

Yes, if there's any way to trade for Paolo, it's an imperative. I just don't see it happening.
