It will be interesting to see what Atlanta does with Gallo today. His contract is scheduled to become fully guaranteed if not waived by today.

Rumors were that Atlanta was going to include Gallo in the Spurs trade for Murray. If Hawks decide to cut Gallo, that could open up the chance for Portland to step into the trade and make it a 3-way with J.Collins coming to Portland & Bledsoe going to the Spurs.

Why do the Spurs want to trade Dejounte Murray?

From what I've read, they want to tank because they think wembanyama is a generational talent.

Gallo and a bunch of firsts. That's an amazing deal for the Hawks. Wish we could've offered something like that.

+ Dejounte might have peaked last season statistically, and he's 26 years old, which is pretty much 4 years older than most of their core pieces - additionally he's coming up for a new contract soon.

Anything we can get off of the Spurs if they're entering full tank mode?

You dont want Dougie McDermott, Jrich or overpay Poeltl. The one guy I like is Keita Bates-Diop, and he's only owed under 2M for next season.

Doubt they will move off of him unless they can turn him into an upgrade now. Murray is clearly a win now move. And a win for the future move. Dumping Collins is not.

Good deal for the Spurs. Murray posted 53% TS on 27% usage. That's CJ level, not nearly good enough to justify being the fulcrum of an offense. He'll be up for a max contract in two years. That type of player is not worth a max. I liken him more to a Lonzo Ball type of player in terms of impact, but he needs the ball to be effective. Not sure taking the ball out of Trae's hands is going to work out for the Hawks and if Trae is handling the ball, Murray needs to be a better spot up shooter, which he is not.

That is the Jrue Holiday package for a guy who is not as good as Jrue Holiday. And the fit with Trae is weird-- he doesn't like to give the ball up.

I applaud the go-for-it-ness of the Hawks though. If our previous GM had the same foresight instead of spending 4 picks on Nance + RoCo + Afflalo maybe we could have done something in the last few years.

The CJ comparison is kinda funny because Murray is one of the best defenders in the league and a walking triple double. That being said, I think it could be a good trade for both teams. I think Trae/Dejounte could be like a teeny tiny MJ/Pippen... just saying that makes me laugh really hard but honestly Trae does the scoring and dominates the ball a lot, while Murray does everything else and scores some too, mostly facilitating off the ball scoring opportunities for Trae.

I meant offensively. Obviously Murray is a better defender, but he needs the ball to be effective on offense. I generally think players who can't carry an offense are not worth max contracts. Offense is king.

They must want to run Trae off the ball a lot this season... otherwise this trade is absolutely a disaster. If they do want to give Trae a Steph-ish role on offense then this trade isn't a bad one. Dejounte is a phenomenal defender, facilitator and pretty much does everything else at a solid starter level. Much like what I think of Grant on our team, I think he will be a much more efficient scorer now that he's not the primary scoring option.
