Ouch! The Suns waited around and either have to eat a contract they don't want or let him walk without compensation. Of course they could match the offer sheet and then pursue trades but I think he'll be trade restricted until mid January. SMH

Don't know that it would be "below-market", but I'm pretty sure that he's presently getting "above-market". I'd like for him to actually be paid an amount commensurate to what other teams might have offered.

As for Norm's defense--he played plenty in Toronto, and I believe he would have been much more effective defensively at SG than he was at SF. I certainly believe him to be better defensively at SG than Ant will be.

I expect the Suns to match. Too much would walk out the door.
December 15 (IIRC) becomes the date Ayton could be traded if he waives his right not to be traded for one year.
    [I could be wrong.]
The trade deadline could be BIG this year.

So either the Suns are forced to go into the tax to match, or they lose a key piece for nothing. And I'm here for making a fellow WC team weaker.

We can still absorb Cam Johnson's contract and stay under the apron btw. That's still possible after waiving Didi. We can help Sarver cut a substantial portion of that tax bill.

What’s a maxed out Aytons market anyway? That doesn’t seem like value imo.

Yeah, that would be crazy not to match. You got to get something out of the #1 pick, especially after not drafting Doncic.

Also... this kinda scenario is exactly why you don't let your RFAs go out and get a contract. Hands get forced and that's never a good thing.

whatever value he had, Indiana just cratered it (unless Phoenix matches Ayton). a guy teams know they HAVE to move on the last year of his contract probably does not have very much value.

Yeah 33 million a year is pretty high for a center. They might have tried and he said he wanted to check the market though. Guess if they made an offer and he refused he probably wouldn't get 133 mil from the Pacers?
Weird how these things work out?

This is an interesting note. So S&Ts can still happen

If Ayton was demanding that Phoenix gave him a max contract, I'm not sure what the Suns could have done other than concede

am I reading this situation right?....Indiana has the cap-space so Ayton's BYC status doesn't matter for them

for the Suns, 50% of Ayton's salary is 15.5M so they could accept Myles Turner and his 17.5M salary. But if Indiana believed they could get something decent for Turner, they might not just agree to give him to Phoenix, especially if they believed the Suns won't match

yes. a Ayton for Turner S&T is still possible for the next 8 hrs or so if Ayton is about to sign the offer today.

I would be shocked if Turner did not bring back good value. He is still only 26.

indiana has very little leverage, he's on an expiring deal. i'd be shocked if they get anything more than a lottery protected first.

Yeah, Phoenix's only leverage here is basically to say, "Trade us Turner today or we'll match the offer sheet this weekend".

Which everyone knows they don't want to do. The fact is that Indy could turn around and say, then give us two future lotto protected firsts for Turner. Phoenix is in win now mode and they'll be in trouble if they let Ayton walk for nothing. Quite a disaster for them unless the talk about them not thinking Ayton was worth the max was posturing.

Indiana gave the offer — and Ayton accepted? Then they can’t do a sign and trade. That ship sailed. IIRC.
This year’s Trade Deadline could be BIG.
