It's an offer, not a done deal as far as I can tell.

I understand but for Russia it's a win win offer...they save face and get a Russian gangster back home and free.

Being released to Russia is it's own prison sentence...they've got his money..probably implanted him with a chip so they can monitor whatever he does...then they can take him out with a drone from Ukraine because they've got a war going on....collateral damage. Fuck the arms dealer...bring the Americans home..I'd trade the gangster to bring you and your wife home anyday bro....can't leave our people to rot in Russian prisons even if they are guilty of stupid shit.
Russia is just using the leverage she gave them. We sure didn't ask for Snowden

People are going to die because of Britney Griner's stupidity and hubris.

He's broke and has nothing to sell....and going to a country running out of weapons. His international gig is exposed dude...he's history. All the Russian money has been frozen or deemed worthless at this point. You're having gangster fantasies about what this guy is today. The Blacklist!!!!!!!! Let Russia feed him.

Yeah, I have difficulty believing that he didn't have any funds in a foreign account that's still accessible, and that he hasn't maintained (or even expanded) the contacts needed to get right back on the arms-dealing horse once released.

Of course, I may have just watched too many action movies.

I'm going to assume that his competition has taken over his clientele and has no interest in letting him back in the game. He could get taken out as soon as he hits the streets.

Apparently the Ruskies have requested Vadim Krasikov, a convicted murderer who is currently serving life in a German prison, be released as well using an FSB back channel. This sounds like a horrible negotiation strategy since we don't even house this POS, but it looks like Biden still tried for it. Stakes are getting a bit higher.
