Yeah, that's even better. Ideally NBA owners would just cover the first million of a WNBA player's contract or something...

I don't think most care about being perceived as being saved. I think it would go a long way toward helping make WNBA players feel less spiteful that men are making so much, while they are being paid as much as a garbage man.

And no disrespect to garbage men, but say want you want about attendance at WNBA games, nobody is coming to watch garbage men do their job. You at least get thousands for WNBA. There is no Garbage Man All Star Game...

I'm not sure what can be done about that. Is there something more you think we should be doing?

40,000 Americans are currently in prison for cannabis. She's a prisoner, not a hostage. She has even plead guilty. Nobody is rising up for the 40,0000 people here who are incarcerated. they are also prisoners. I want them ALL free ..not just the celebrities. It sucks Russia has done this but Whelan wasn't even on anyone's radar until Britany got arrested. The good in this situation is that it has raised awareness to the ridiculous laws against an herb and spotlighted the horrible sentences Russians give out to foreigners as opposed to their own people arrested for the same crimes. Again...I hope they all come home....from every country in the world...and our own prisons.

According to the ACLU’s original analysis, marijuana arrests now account for over half of all drug arrests in the United States. Of the 8.2 million marijuana arrests between 2001 and 2010, 88% were for simply having marijuana. Nationwide, the arrest data revealed one consistent trend: significant racial bias. Despite roughly equal usage rates, Blacks are 3.73 times more likely than whites to be arrested for marijuana.

WNBA = Welfare National Basketball Association

Million dollars a year for a 2 month season in a league anyone barely watches or cares about.

Which, on a per game basis, works out to about 1/8 the amount the average NBA player makes.

Some of you are making the assumption that Griner will be treated as well in Russia as she would be in an American prison.

Yes, what she did was dumb but the punishment for that shouldn't be sexual and physical assaults for 9 years.

Bring her home along with the rest of the Americans being held in Russia.

I just don't understand how anyone could rationalize releasing someone who could lead to the deaths of innocent people.

We immortalized the people of flight 93 in a movie because they were willing to fight to save lives and ultimately gave up their own lives in the process.

But we're going to release someone who has absolutely caused the deaths of innocent people so that we can get a semi-famous basketball player out of prison in Russia?

Drop it to "free" and you might get some butts in the seats....... although you'd just have a bunch of smashed people.

The Timbers used to have dollar beer night...... and it was pretty fun to sit behind the opposing goalie and yell drunken trash talk at him.

She broke laws in another country. She's a convicted drug smuggler under their laws and their judicial system. She's worked and lived in Russia for 7-8 years already and should have known that Marijuana is not legal in that country.

I don't know how prisons are in Russia, but in the US Prisons, it seems people are already sexually and physically assaulted in US prisons anyway. Hence all the "I hope he gets raped in prison" comments when someone is put in jail.

And there are also more NBA players. And when the NBA started there wasn't a dominant league it had to compete with for ratings. If there had been the NBA probably would have folded.

If we want the WNBA to be healthy we'll have to invest in it. That is beneficial to the NBA as well.

I would submit that paying WNBA players like garbage men isn't the best way to make it a competitive league.

Garbage men are an integral and valuable part of daily life and living in society. They work hard and do a gross job most wouldn't want to do. I don't know why you have to denigrate them like that.

The WNBA players play a sport for people's entertainment. And lose money doing so.
