I like the idea; 82 games is incredibly boring.

Winner should get HCA in opening round of the playoffs; with runner up getting playoff birth.

Ideally I'd also trim the schedule down to 60-70 games; but doesn't seem like thats ever being considered.

Criticism that this leads to injuries or teams won't try makes no sense; thats literally what happens now over a bulk of the 82 games.

These "tournament games" will count towards their normal regular season record?

Yes that's the beauty of it. Only the final two teams play an extra game.

Curious how they are going to create the schedule? This could get messy.

It will be a playoff atmosphere mid season which means more energy and a faster pace. We will see guys getting injured during the this tournament and it will influence the rest of the regular season.

Won't be easy but worth it IMO.

Trimming the schedule down might help with this, but it will be felt in other ways. That's a huge loss in revenue. To make up for it ticket prices will go up. Season ticket holders will be paying the same if not more for less games.

In the future, there will be 1230 tournaments per year, each involving 2 teams.
Think of it, every time you go to a game, a championship trophy will be awarded! Exciting, yes?

If the NBA is going to move forward with this I hope they will move the all star game & festivities to after the NBA finals are over with. Maybe they could give the players and coaches 1-2 weeks off mid season instead or after the in season tournament?

I wonder what the stats are on that. Do people get injured more during the playoffs? I don’t think so.

50 game seasons. Top 12 teams advance. Final 4 spots set by single game elimination tournament. Playoff series shortened to best of 5

The NBA will soon be like the Special Olympics, everyone gets a trophy.

And I'll still show up to the parade when the Blazers win the Week After Valentine's Day 6th Mini In-Season Championship!

I guess they could just start lowering the cap as well.

I literally have given ZERO thought about Dame’s Bubble MVP since it happened until you mentioned it lmao. I know my opinion doesn’t matter, but you can also easily read the opinion of someone else that doesn’t matter and use it to make your case.

Not saying Dame’s Bubble MVP doesn’t matter either. The Bubble happened because of a worldwide circumstance that happens like once a century—and we made the playoffs because of his performance. This is a random idea to make more money for the NBA. Dame winning $100k to his favorite charity every year in the middle of the season is going to enhance his HOF resume? Stop.

If the Clips had to choose between having Kawhi play 65 games a year or being the MVP of that random tournament, Clips are choosing the former 100 times out of 100.

If the logistics are done right, this has a potential to be good. I can see
Until we know all the logistical details, it's hard to definitively diss or approve of it. I'm keeping an open mind

The greats will aim for the hat trick- MVP, Finals MVP, Midseason MVP, and All Star MVP. It will be a whole new thing to aim for. For people who say this “random” in-season tournament won’t matter, I have news for you: NONE OF THIS MATTERS. The Championship in June means nothing. It’s all just for fun. We’ve just collectively decided the championship in June is what we want for our team. We can do the same with the mid-season tournament. It’s something else to win and that’s fun. It’s also a testing ground for how the team will do in postseason. If a team plays badly in in-season tournament, that may be an impetus for a trade. It’s also a chance for Dame to win a Christmas bonus for his lesser-paid teammates. And that’s a real thing that actually does matter.

The NFL is a different game with a different history and the Super Bowl. Cutting NBA games would reduce revenue and really hurt the nearby restaurants, arena-staff, all those people who got hurt by 2020 shutdown. Why would we voluntarily want to hurt those people’s livelihoods again?

I mean I get what you’re saying, but the “none of this matters” argument is actually really lame. We get that in a grand scheme of things in a world where people starve none of this matters, but wtf kind of argument is that to bring up in a sports forum?

It’s actually not true that the greats will aim for hat-trick MVPs, etc. Lebron would have joined the dunk contest if that were the case. In the 19 times Kareem was in the All Star game, he’s never won the All Star MVP. Barkley has said in more than one interview “we always try to get the guy that was from there or playing for the home city the MVP, but there’s always at least one dumbass who always tries to win the MVP every year”.
