When I worked at Tektronix everyone got 10 paid sick days every year. Unused sick time was converted to supplemental health insurance upon retirement. Unused sick time was treated as unused vacation when an employee quit. I always thought that was fair.

Right, and those fees are harder for poor people (including higher rates of minorities) to pay, so it impacts them disproportionately.
So not being able to afford to fly because of fees doesn't impact them? Not many rich people would have to make that decision. Thereby the poor and minorities are disproportionately impacted by the fees.
They can still fly, just not in premium economy or first, which subsidizes the rest of the flight. If anything, they are helped by the fees since the more able travelers pay them.
