I agree with this part: Of course, if you open the primary, then you encourage voters from the other party to ratfuck you by crossing over to vote for the least-electable candidate. Better would be to go to a single primary for everyone with the top two advancing to the general regardless of party, as some other states have done. Even better would be to combine that with ranked-choice voting. But reality matters. As Rumsfeld might have said, you go to vote with the political system you have, not the political system you might want or wish to have at a later time. In 2022 we have the system we have.
