DC HENDERSON/ WR COACH HAMILTON/ TE COACH ZERNHELT OUT<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Staff ChangesThe New York Jets announced today the services of defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson, wide receiver coach Pep Hamilton, and tight end coach John Zernhelt, will not be retained. The announcements were made by Jets? Head Coach Eric Mangini.Henderson was named the Jets? defensive coordinator on January 26, 2004, after serving as the defensive backs coach for the Baltimore Ravens from 1999-2003. In 2005, his group ranked second in the NFL against the pass and 12th overall. In his first season as a coordinator he led a Jets? defensive unit that shutout seven opponents in the second-half of games, and ranked seventh in the NFL, fifth against the run and 14th against the pass.Hamilton served as a member of the Jets? coaching staff since 2003 when he was named the offensive quality control coach. After his first season he was named an offensive assistant coach before being promoted to oversee the wide receiver position. Prior to joining the Jets, Hamilton served as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for his alma-mater Howard University.Zernhelt joined the Jets? coaching staff on February 10, 2005 as the tight end coach. Under Zernhelt?s tutelage, Jets? tight ends caught 52 passes for 634 yards and two touchdowns. Prior to joining the Jets, he served one season as the head coach of The Citadel (SC).</div>http://www.newyorkjets.com/BOB SUTTON NAMED DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>MANGINI NAMES SUTTON DEFENSIVE COORDINATORBy MARK CANNIZZAROJanuary 19, 2006 --The staffing procedure for Eric Mangini's new-face Jets began yesterday with the new head coach interviewing members of the current staff and hiring Bob Sutton as his defensive coordinator, according to multiple team sources.Mangini, according to the sources, is also retaining defensive line coach Denny Marcin, defensive backs coach Corwin Brown and strength and conditioning coach Markus Paul. That might not be all of the former Herman Edwards assistants who'll be retained. Mangini, who worked his way around Weeb Ewbank Hall interviewing the existing assistant coaches, isn't yet finished meeting with everyone. It's believed Mangini began with the defensive side of the ball, interviewing special teams coach Mike Westhoff, who might yet stay.Mangini then started on the offensive coaches, but he didn't complete the interviews as evening approached. It's uncertain whether he got to offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger, offensive line coach Doug Marrone or receivers coach Pep Hamilton. If not, they'll be interviewed today. The hiring of Sutton was a mild surprise in that Sutton, who has been the linebackers coach here since Al Groh and Bill Parcells brought him aboard in 2000, is such a quiet figure. But he's an accomplished coach, having been a head coach at Army.Defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson wasn't in the building at all, according to sources. He's believed to be in Green Bay, where he'll interview for the defensive coordinator post there. There is no chance of him staying anyway.Westhoff, reached last night, said no decision was made on his future yet. He has one year remaining on his contract."We met and talked and it was very fair," he said. "Eric doesn't know me; he knows of me. There were some good things that came out, some good positive things. I don't think they're anxious for me to leave."So far, it was a very fair discussion. We had very frank discussions. I was very honest."Keeping Westhoff, who has one year remaining on his current contract, makes a lot of sense for Mangini. The Jets' special teams success has been well-documented. If Mangini doesn't retain Westhoff, Edwards is surely waiting to pounce on him whenever he's freed from his contract."Whatever people decide I respect and I'll move forward," Westhoff said. "The Jets have been extremely fair to me over the years. If I stay here, I want them to want me to be here under the same kind of role I've had, where I helped out in some personnel and was very involved in penalties and rules."He expects to speak with Mangini again today, saying, "I want to get going ... very shortly here."One heavily speculated name to be Mangini's offensive coordinator is Mike Sheppard, most recently with the Saints. Sheppard worked with Mangini both in Cleveland and Baltimore."I haven't heard anything yet," Sheppard said last night."I know he's had a lot of good coaches come through there with him and I'm sure he's got some guys he's talking to."This is the fourth call I've gotten today and none of them has been from him. He's probably got his list together of how he's going to proceed through things."mark.cannizzaro@nypost.com</div>http://www.nypost.com/sports/jets/61821.htmMANGINI WANTS HEIMERDINGER, HEIMERDINGER WANTS OUT<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Heimerdinger stuck in N.Y.?posted: Thursday, January 19, 2006A major fight is brewing with the New York Jets. At the moment, Jets coach Eric Mangini is considering holding offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger to his contract even though Heimerdinger was hired by Herman Edwards and lost the bid for the head-coaching job to Mangini.Mangini spent Wednesday meeting with his defensive coaches and was planning to work on the offensive staff later in the week. Heimerdinger wants out, but he has not been given permission. Because of Heimerdinger's expertise in running the offense, the Jets might want to keep him.Heimerdinger has two years remaining on his contract with salaries of $1 million and $1.2 million. He will have several opportunities to go elsewhere. With Gary Kubiak leaving the Broncos to become the head coach of the Houston Texans, Heimerdinger could reunite with one of his best friends, Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan.Heimerdinger is expected to tell the Jets he's not interesting in working under Mangini. The Jets don't have to let him out of the contract, but it's rare for a head coach to have an assistant on staff who doesn't want to be there.</div>

Who cares. All they need is Brooksie and they're automatically Superbowl contendors.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Jets, Heimerdinger part waysNEW YORK (Jan. 25, 2006) -- The New York Jets parted ways with offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger.Last week, new coach Eric Mangini informed Heimerdinger the team would retain him to run the offense. Heimerdinger was upset with the decision because he was interviewed and passed over for the head coaching job, making for an awkward situation.Plus, he came in under former coach Herman Edwards last year. When asked last week whether he was happy with the decision, Heimerdinger said, "I don't have a choice." It later became clear he was trying to get out of his contract, in which he had two years left at over $2 million. It is unclear what type of financial agreement was made to let Heimerdinger out of his deal. Heimerdinger's agent, Bob LaMonte, was traveling and unavailable for comment. Heimerdinger didn't return a message seeking comment."I have great respect for Mike Heimerdinger as a football coach," Mangini said in a statement. "Ultimately, we agreed that the best course of action would be for the Jets to go in a different direction."Heimerdinger has been linked to Denver since Edwards left for Kansas City. Now that Gary Kubiak is on the verge of becoming the Texans coach, Heimerdinger has a chance to reunite with good friend and Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.Heimerdinger and Shanahan were college roommates at Eastern Illinois, and he previously worked for Shanahan while coaching the Broncos receivers from 1995-99. On Jan. 24, Shanahan seemed undecided about whether to look outside for an offensive coordinator or within the team, which could mean elevating offensive line coach Rick Dennison to the spot."I'm not really sure," Shanahan said. "It could be quick. It could be a little bit later. I have a few different directions to go. I'm not really sure right now. I'm going to let a little time go by and find out what my options are."Heimerdinger also was Titans offensive coordinator from 2000-04 before going to the Jets for 2005.He went to New York believing the bigger spotlight would help his chances to become a head coach. Instead, the Jets struggled through injuries on offense after losing Chad Pennington, Jay Fiedler and Curtis Martin to injuries.</div>ARTICLEDang that's ruff, what next?

Good offensive coordinator and it sucks to see him go, but id rather Mangini had a happy offensive coordinator then someone who didnt want to be there. So well see what happens.

not that sad about itour offense, in the on year he ahd control, was like 31st in the league in scoring (right ahead the offensive powerhouse known as the Houston Texans)...since a new coach wascoming in, it isnt surprising that hes leaving. Im more sad that Donnie Henderson is leaving. I dont know if its official but he is 99% going to KC with Edwards...he was soo good

Herm Edwards was forced to keep Gunther Cunningham to be their D-Coordinator. Also, The Dinger's last season was far off of his normal numbers due to the 8 season ending injuries on offense, and not having the personell to pull it off when they were healthy anyway. I could go into how we had the wrong personell on offense from the very beginning for Dinger, except its kinda pointless now.

i udnerstnad (especially about the injuries) but at the same time, he came in with this reputation and even before the injuries, we were disgustingon offense. I heard he was a leading candidate to become our head coach until Mangini came in. I was in utter dsibelief

    Re: Mangini's Staff

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The New York Jets' search for an offensive coordinator has ended, as ESPN.com has learned that the team has hired San Diego quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer, the son of Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer.Schottenheimer, 32, interviewed last week for the key position on first-year coach Eric Mangini's staff, and was said by league insiders to have been extremely impressive in his presentation. The addition of Schottenheimer certainly continues a trend of sorts toward youth on the Jets staff, as Mangini is just 35 years old.The younger Schottenheimer essentially replaces Mike Heimerdinger, who was released by the Jets from the final two years of his contract, so that he could rejoin the staff of the Denver Broncos, for whom he previously worked. The Jets had interviewed several candidates for the coordinator post and it is believed that Schottenheimer won out over Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur. The Jets also spoke with former Cleveland Browns head coach Chris Palmer, who on Monday accepted a position on the Dallas Cowboys' staff. The offensive coordinator job is critical for any franchise of course, but it figures to be especially crucial for the Jets. There is uncertainty involving the quarterback position, as Chad Pennington continues his rehabilitation from a second shoulder surgery, and might not be ready for training camp. Star tailback Curtis Martin will turn 33 in May and his productivity was dramatically diminished in 2005. And the offensive line unit showed too much age last season and needs to be revamped.A former college quarterback at Kansas and the University of Florida, Schottenheimer has been in the league for seven seasons. He joined the St. Louis Rams' staff for the 1997 season, coached at Kansas City in 1998, then went to the college level for two years at Syracuse (1999) and Southern California (2000).After spending the 2001 season on his father's staff with the Washington Redskins, he followed the elder Schottenheimer to San Diego in 2002. Schottenheimer is said to have a very keen feel for the passing game, is good in mentoring quarterbacks, and was key to the development of Chargers' quarterback Drew Brees the last two seasons.</div>http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2312351

Agreed, although hopefully he is alot more agressive then his old man is...im sick of Martyball aka Hermyball. [IMG] Has several things I like...1) That hes younger then Mangini, id would have rather not had some 50 year old (on the brink of getting his own HC job) trying a conflict of power with Mangini.2) That he mentored Brees and Rivers into success, so he must have done something right there.Im not sure how it will work out, but it has the sounds of a good signing.
