I'm sure that most of you have heard that Mauna Loa on the Big Island is erupting for the first time in 38 years. So far, it's not threatening any communities, but I'm wondering if @BLAZINGGIANTS is getting nervous about the place he bought over there a year or two ago.
I have lots of friends who would be impacted by this...the good news is the eruption didn't do the St Helens eruption...it is vented but this volcano could very well be a Krakatoa waiting to happen....Hawaii is growing and that's mama earth birth breaking her water. Hilo will be in most danger immediately from vog which is toxic to breath....if it erupts a second time then they will probably evacuate the Hilo area because it's right in the path. Thing is this baby has a lot of underground paths.....it's the largest living volcano on earth. I'd cancel any travel plans anyone has coming up soon....eventually it'll probably clear away and be fine but for now, they don't know when it'll calm down...there are a lot of ginger and herb and flower farms around that area.. so far this is a slow moving lava flow which is good...much like the one in 89-90 that wiped out Kalapana and Black Sands Beach....
I'm good. Thanks for asking, though! My house is 15 minutes from the already-active and erupting Kilauea. Mauna Loa's flows are mostly to the south portion of the island, or that's the expectation anyhow. That being said, Mother Nature always keeps us guessing, right? My house is Lava Zone 3, which means my house itself is unlikely to be impacted by flows. My insurance rates are the same level/rate I pay on my Oregon house, so I'm in what's considered a safe area as far as damage to my home. The AQI is the one possible issue I might have to deal with. For reference, the AQI at my Hawaii house is currently 24; it's 53 in McMinnville. Hilo is 56. I'm supposed to be back in a few weeks. We shall see, though. I'm not currently worried and plan to go have my typical New Year in Hawaii as I've done the last several years. Can't nobody hold me down..... oh, no.... I've got to keep on movin'.
A lot of folks don't realize how slowly those lava flows usually move....when Kalapana burned we walked all aroung the lava...people stopped it in places with garden hoses. One guy saved his house but in the end his house was inside a giant lave bowl....stay safe dude! If you're there mask up bigtime...that vog is nasty shit...clean your water tank out well too if you have one after it blows over...it'll be full of those little black triangular shards
No disrespect to any forum geeks on here, but if you move to Oklahoma and are hit by a Tornado…. Florida and a Hurricane….. LAX and an earthquake and a GOD DAMN ISLAND in the Pacific Rim (which is a FUCKING VOLCANO) you really don’t have a lot of room to complain right? Just saying.
Oregon has 13 live volcanos dude....you're walkin' the walk...Bend/Sisters area has 3 of them side by side
Stop. We have a TAD bit more space to move about. And I knew what I was getting into everytime we played hoop up on Mt.Tabor….the court is IN the crater.
compare the population of the Hilo to Portland and get back to me on all that "space" to move around! Portland...2, 197,ooo people Hilo...44,730 people now there are some large Hawaiians, I'll give you that. Where you live you'd probably be crushed by the people panicking and running through your hood....Hilo people don't run anywhere....they know Pele takes her time.
I wasn't complaining at all. I am more positive about the situation than you are in the "What's going on in Portland? thread, FAMS!! I remain positive (perhaps more than I should be, given that nobody knows what Mother Nature holds). I am honestly more fearful of the volcanoes here in the PNW and the potential for a massive earthquake. The air quality index at my Mountain View house is 17 right now. Lower than anything in the Portland Metro. The 1984 eruption came within a mile of our neighborhood, but it was overall just a small flow that came near.
All you need now is the sacrifice to Pele and you're good! (maybe a disgruntled houseguest) The volcanos on the Big Island have release valves we don't have so much in Oregon....I was told that if all 13 popped off at once the closest damage to me would still be 80 miles east of me. Where you are you should be good. Might be a good time for me to buy a small place there again. Lot of haoles will freak out and move back to the mainland.
