<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Jets audible: Eye Vandy QB Cutler in draftFriday, January 27, 2006BY DAVE HUTCHINSONStar-Ledger StaffIn an apparent philosophical shift, the Jets are seriously considering drafting Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler in the first round of the April draft should they trade down from the fourth pick overall, according to someone with knowledge of the team's thinking. With the hiring of new coach Eric Mangini, the Jets now seem willing to select a quarterback in the first round and groom him for the long term. Under former coach Herman Edwards, the Jets were believed to be planning to address other needs with their first-round pick and sign a veteran quarterback to compete with Chad Pennington in training camp.Pennington, 29, had his second rotator cuff surgery in an eight-month span last October and his career is in jeopardy.Meanwhile, the Jets continue their search for an offensive coordinator, with Saints offensive coordinator Mike Sheppard, former Browns head coach and Texans offensive coordinator Chris Palmer and perhaps Eagles quarterback coach Pat Shurmur said to be on their list of candidates.Tony Wise remains the front-runner to replace offensive line coach Doug Marrone, who wants out of his contract, which has a year remaining. At the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., several Jets team representatives and scouts, including general manager Terry Bradway, had a lengthy dinner with Cutler on Wednesday night. The Dolphins also have shown interest in Cutler. In addition to Cutler, the Jets have shown considerable interest in offensive tackles D'Brickashaw Ferguson (Virginia) and Eric Winston (Miami). If the Jets keep the fourth pick overall, they likely would take Ferguson, who is considered a franchise left tackle. If they trade down, they would try to select Cutler in the 10-to-15-pick range and pick up an offensive tackle such as Winston later in the first round. On many early draft boards, Cutler is ranked as the third best quarterback behind Matt Leinart (USC) and Vince Young (Texas).Cutler, 6-3, 223 pounds, was a one-man band for Vandy this season. He threw for 3,073 yards, 21 touchdowns and just nine interceptions while leading the Commodores to a 5-6 mark in the competitive Southeastern Conference. He has good mobility, rushing for 215 yards. Most teams view Cutler as a player who'll need at least a year on the bench behind a veteran. He has good arm strength, smarts, toughness and a strong work ethic, according to reports.</div>http://www.nj.com/jets/ledger/index.ssf?/b...4650.xml&coll=1
Ideally, I want the Jets draft to be like this.....<u>Round 1 - Pick 7</u> (via Trade Down)QB - Jay Cutler - VanderbiltPennington's future is uncertain and we cant afford to be counting on the guy to be the man for the next 4-5 years anymore. Its time to go out with the old and in with the new, especially since the guy hasnt been healthy for 3 years now. Jay Cutler has a terrific arm, great intangibles and most importantly, is DURABLE. We can make him the face of the Franchise and build a terrific offense around him.<u>Round 2 - Pick 4</u>OT - Eric Winston - Miami (FL)The guy, coming into the season was considered the second tackle on the board, and has had his stock drop from an unimpressive senior season because he was recovering from an injury. Next season, the guy will be fully healthy and able to step right into our starting Right Tackle role so that he and Adrian Jones can become our Bookend tackles for years to come. If the guy doesnt last this long, subsititue the top Offensive Tackle in this pick<u>Round 2 - Pick 7</u> (via the Trade Down)TE - Marcedes Lewis - UCLAI doubt the guy will fall this far, but he is one hell of an offensive talent and an offensive playmaker. Chris Baker is a Free Agent TE and Doug Jolley has been rather unimpressive so we could use a playmaking Tight End to open up the offense more. Jay Cutler has shown in the senior bowl practices that he likes utilizing the Tight End and that this can be a best friend for a young QB. If he doesnt last this long, substitute TE Dominique Byrd from USC in this slot
i still dont understand why we traded a #1 pick for Jolley last year...what a terrible trade for the Jets

are you sure?!?!? I thought the 2nd rounder that we used on Nugent was one we got for FA loss... and i didnt know the 7th /6th rounders were included. Still, Jolley was less tan zero for us..

Jolley actually came on strong the last 3-4 weeks, but Yeah, he was kinda useless until week 14.
if they could they would but they just rewarded him with like a 5 year dael like last year and its a shitload of money, no one will take it...

I could see Chad Pennington going to Kansas City, taking a full year to rehab and then take over for Trent Green.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Nebkreb @ Jan 29 2006, 06:06 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>i doubt it, because he will be 31 next year...barely younger than Green</div>Trent Green has a good 6 years on CP, and CP is only going to be 30 Plus, we both know who Herm favors an aging vet over a young rookie anyday.
I think that if Marcades Lewis is there for the Panthers at about 28th Carolina will take him because Mangum blows chunks but If they get Jay Cutler they will be better only because Pennington's shoulder is done man he has torn it like twice.

Either way, consider yourselfes lucky if you end up with one of those 2, cause they will both be good IMO.As for CP, I do think that the guy's arm is shot, and I think the only chance he really has at a full recovery is taking a year off and fully rehabing it, and then bulking up the arms. Something that he wont be allowed to do in New York.
I think alot of teams are pulling a Phillip Rivers. I know Cutler is a good QB but I think alot of teams towards the top are talking this guy up to raise trade intrest. After the first few picks the talen level drops off quite a bit.

People are treating these 3 prospects like they are going to be sure-fire superstars when in reality Reggie Bush is one hell of a talent, but has some durability concerns. Matt Leinart has an throwing arm equal to that of Chad Pennington when healthy (which really isnt that bad BTW, just below average), and Vince Young is a very Boom-or-Bust prospect where he will either be a superstar or a backup in this league in 4 years.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Bradkaz96 @ Feb 3 2006, 12:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>You sound like a guy with the 4th pick in the draft...lmao</div>I would be saying the same thing regardless, I thought the same thing of Alex Smith last year where he was a mid-first talent who should sit on the bench for a year. But because of the extreme amount of hype that was around him (mainly because of a lack of a better QB in that draft) he went first overall and they had to play him and look where it turned out. With that said, I think Alex Smith will be significantly better next season, although I dont think he has the same kind of upside you traditionally look for in a #1 overall prospect. All of the top 3 prospects have some flaws if you ask me.Reggie Bush---Too Small---Will he be able to handle 320 carries a season?---Member of a star-studded USC lineup, if he was having an off-game at USC then Matt Leinart would throw for 4 Touchdowns, he wont have the tremendous talent on Offense to rely on in the pro's.---The Pac-10 is traditionally known as a weak defensed conference, how will he do playing against real Defenses in the Pro's.Matt Leinart---Lacks Strong enough Arm. I guarantee you he will not be able to throw a 25 yard out route in the New York Winds, his passes will get taken off in strong winds and they did at USC also.---Heisman Winner, if your supersticious, then stay away from him at all costs.---Already had 2 surgeries on his throwing arm to fix 'tendonitis'---Member of a star-studded USC lineup, if he was having an off-game at USC then Reggie Bush and LenDale White would run for 4 Touchdowns, he wont have the tremendous talent on Offense to rely on in the pro's.---The Pac-10 is traditionally known as a weak defensed conference, how will he do playing against real Defenses in the Pro's.Vince Young---Lacks accuracy on the deep passes---Lacks Michael Vick 'breakaway' speed to be able to run around defenders, in the NFL he will have to run through defenders to be a star and I dont know if he can do that.---Has horrible throwing Mechanics, Dont expect to see him play at all his first season, and maybe not even his second season.---The Big 12 is also traditionally known as a weak defensed conference, how will he do playing against real Defenses in the Pro's.These guys arent sure-fire hall of famers like ESPN would like to make them out to be.
