Kind of think Utah would have done much better with their starting QB.

there are going to be more departing Ducks. Dorlus may opt into the NFL draft. It's uncertain what Cam Mckormick is going to do as well. There will very likely be a couple of WR's leaving, maybe more

now remember, the NCAA rule is that a new head coach has 18 months to 'reconfigure' the scholarship allotment.

I 100% agree there will be more departures, there will have to be about 10 more players that must leave to stay under the 85 max allotment. I do not think there is an exception to that number prior to camp starting

I'm not sure when the deadline is for 85. Might be the beginning of training camp; or during

there are two windows for the transfer portal: the current one that started Dec. 5 and runs thru Jan 18 (a 45 day window). And a 2nd 15 day portal that runs from May 1-15. Last year, Bo Nix, Christian Gonzalez, Jordan Riley and Chase Cota transferred in the early portal, while Bucky Irving, Noah Whittington, & Casey Rogers transferred in the May portal (the first 45 day portal window actually starts every year on the day after the football playoff teams are announced)

the results of spring ball motivates a lot of transfers as they can see their pecking order on their current team and how they get along with new position coaches in a real world setting.

IIRC, with the Aston Porter commitment, Oregon is now at 92. That's after 17 outgoing and 6 incoming transfers...lol. And, obviously, the Ducks haven't stopped recruiting the 2023 cycle yet either.

They are still in it for Nyckoles Harbor and Rodrick Pleasant, although landing either seems like a long shot at this point; Harbor has scheduled a visit though. Lots of smoke that the Ducks will make as strong a push as they can for Texas A&M transfer Anthony Lucas. He's an edge and the Ducks desperately need to upgrade that position. Ducks also might be looking at a Utah State edge that entered the portal a couple of days ago. Obviously, all teams have to maintain flexibility while gauging who is new in the portal. But yeah, there will have to be some attrition with current scholarships. And it's really difficult to track who has eligibility left because of that non-counting Covid year in 2020

    ************************************************************************************

by the way, players in the portal do NOT have to sign with a new team during the portal window. They can sign at any time as long as they meet the entrance standards for the new school. Somebody in the portal right now can wait till training camp in August to actually transfer. Of course, their current school does not have to honor a scholarship for a player in the portal. Those can be revoked at the beginning of the next academic term/semester

there's a lot of hand-wringing about the 'processing' of athletes. Schools essentially 'forcing' a player to leave and vacating their scholarship (even though SEC programs have been doing that for decades). How it's 'unfair' to the athlete. I'm not very sympathetic to that narrative. Players now have NIL and that transfer portal in their options list. Expecting a full 4 year scholarship seems unrealistic. I think that's especially true because almost all academic scholarships are issued on a year-to-year basis; and most of those don't encompass all the benefits of an athletic scholarship. Students on academic scholarships have to earn their scholarship by their annual academic performance. Seems fair that an athletic scholarship should be awarded by athletic performance

and it's not like most of the transferring football players don't have options. For instance, Sean Dollars and Seven McGee: they transferred to smaller colleges. Non power-5 schools. There will still be scholarships available for just about all of these transfers if what they want is a degree. They can still get a full-ride deal at scools like Montana State, or Linfield, or Eastern Washington, or Chico State. So it's not like being processed at a power-5 school is torpedoing their chance for a degree

Yup. They gave the players a lot of power with NIL and the transfer portal, so I think it's only fair that schools should be able to cut players whenever they want. The players wanted to make it more like a business, so that comes with the territory.

I don't think teams are allowed to cut players, but they can advise them to transfer (aka "process" them). This has been a standard SEC tactic for many years.

Now, if a player refuses to enter the portal, my understanding is the team is stuck with them and their scholarship. I suppose they could look for non-football related reasons to revok their scholarship, but that could hurt them in future recruiting.

Trying to walk the line between amatuer athletics with millions of dollars is a tricky one!

I don’t know what the terms are now, but the SEC could “cut” players. They used to have a 4 year renewable scholarship where it had to be renewed every year. Which meant… it was a year to year proposition.

The Big10 went with 4 year guaranteed scholarships and I believe that started to shift the narrative a bit.

Now I think you push people out by not giving them reps in practice.

Also I think the “modern day” method of processing someone… is telling 5th/6th year seniors their time is up

all the Power-5 conferences made an informal agreement a few years ago to 'guarantee' 4 year scholarships. That was well before NIL and the transfer portal and there have been a lot of rumblings from the same power-5 conferences that they needed to revise that 4 year rule

it's a rule that probably has a ton of gray area open to interpretation.

Duck commits Johnny Bowens and Austin Novasad have been getting rave reviews at the All American bowl. Here's some highlights...

Here's what i realized watching Men's Duck basketball team lose badly to Colorado tonight: It doesn't help to have three 5 star 7 footers if nobody on the team can shoot threes. Imagine how crowded the paint gets...
