[IMG] I think someone is just jealous that the Jets have only had 2 losing seasons since 1997, whereas the Giants have 4 losing seasons in that time frame. [IMG] As for Pennington, I think he will probably react to it just fine because he has always been a team player and he realizes the Jets cant possibly afford to pay him something like 12 million against the salary cap next year. Not to mention the good ol' southern boy already has something like 30 million dollers from the Jets. I doubt he needs that much money. [IMG]

Chad passes on offerChad Pennington's agent has rejected the Jets' proposal to slash the injured quarterback's base salary for 2006 to $1 million and force him to earn the remaining $8 million he is owed through incentives. The impasse is not surprising, but it means newly anointed general manager Mike Tannenbaum and Pennington's high-powered agent, Tom Condon, are in staredown mode. The Jets have until March 3 to decide if they can live with Pennington's current contract, negotiate a cap reduction or release him. Pennington is due a $3-million roster bonus that day, a payment that would bring his earnings to $25 million on the seven-year contract extension he signed in September 2004 - a span during which he has played only 18 games.Pennington's cap figure was scheduled to be $12 million this season, but the team already has the discretion to reduce it to $7.5 million by prorating all of his $6-million base salary against the cap for the next four seasons. But the Jets, who are more than $20 million over the projected cap, need to cut deeper. They don't want to pay the $3-million bonus and believe Pennington should account for the fact that he's coming off a second operation on his right (throwing) shoulder in as many seasons.Pennington has missed 22 of 48 regular-season games due to injury the past three seasons. But Pennington's camp is opposed to forfeiting any of the $9 million he is due, a scenario that - if unresolved - could lead to his release, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.According to two more people with knowledge of the situation, the Jets are trying to get running back Curtis Martin, center Kevin Mawae, guard Pete Kendall, tackle Jason Fabini and receiver Laveranues Coles to accept pay cuts or reworked deals. As expected, they have decided to part ways with cornerback Ty Law, who is due an $11-million bonus March 3. Mawae, coming off surgery to repair a torn left triceps, apparently will refuse to take a pay cut and will ask the Jets to release him if they can't handle his projected $4.5-million cap figure.Meanwhile, in a sign that the Jets' new regime is cleaning house throughout the organization, the team fired vice president of operations Mike Kensil last week. Kensil, the son of late Jets president Jim Kensil, spent 29 years with the team.

Pennington Update<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Mangini stays mum on Pennington's Jets futureAssociated PressNEW YORK -- Chad Pennington is rehabbing his shoulder, working hard to get back onto the field. That was about all new Jets coach Eric Mangini was willing to divulge Monday when asked about the team's quarterback. Mangini did everything he could to avoid answering the biggest question facing the Jets this week: Will they retain Pennington at a reduced salary or cut him?The Jets started renegotiating with the franchise quarterback last week, hoping to slash his base pay to make his contract more salary-cap friendly. The team is about $26 million over the cap and needs to come to an agreement with Pennington before the start of free agency March 3.If not, Pennington could be looking for a new team."Chad's status with the Jets is unchanged," Mangini said during a conference call to discuss his new coaching staff. "He's a great competitor, a great person."Pennington's agent, Tom Condon, reportedly rejected a deal that would have reduced the quarterback's base salary from $9 million to $1 million. Condon, who didn't return phone messages, is expected to meet with general manger Mike Tannenbaum at the scouting combine in Indianapolis this week.Mangini wouldn't confirm the meeting would take place, saying, "You'll have to ask Mike."Pennington, coming off a second rotator cuff injury to his throwing shoulder, signed a $64 million, seven-year deal two years ago. He is expected to have a salary cap number close to $12 million this season, including a $3 million roster bonus due in March. Even if the Jets cut him, they would take a salary hit of about $10 million because of the prorated salary cap.Complicating the issue is the lack of an extension to the league's collective bargaining agreement with the players' union. The contract expires in 2008, but 2007 would be an uncapped season, leaving questions about the length and size of deals with free agents.Mangini said he has had several "great discussions" with Pennington. But Mangini wouldn't discuss his thoughts of Pennington as a player. When asked whether Pennington would be the starting quarterback in 2006, Mangini hedged."That's a hypothetical question that at this point I can't answer," he said.Mangini declined to say when Pennington would begin throwing again. Pennington hurt his shoulder in September and missed the rest of the season. Though he is determined to come back stronger than ever, there are serious questions about whether he can do it.Because of that, the Jets want him to take a pay cut. After Condon rejected the first offer, several reports said the team was on the verge of cutting Pennington. But there are still serious negotiations that must occur.Even if Pennington is upset with the next offer, he doesn't have much leverage if he decides he wants to break ties with the team that drafted him. Pennington would command the veteran minimum salary on the open market, which is less than $1 million."Contracts are something we don't discuss publicly," Mangini said. The Jets also have asked veteran running back Curtis Martin to take a pay cut, and are expected to place the franchise tag on defensive end John Abraham.Mangini also announced his coaching staff, with Brian Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator and Bob Sutton as defensive coordinator. Among the bigger names, former linebacker Bryan Cox was hired as assistant defensive line coach, and University of Michigan defensive coordinator Jim Herrmann was hired as linebackers coach.</div> Sounds like hes gone.....
