4 years, $17.8M. Seems like a good deal but not sure how it impacts our cap situation. Also wonder how that impacts Lafrieniere who I believe is up for renewal.
Lafreniere will probably get a bridge deal similar to KK, maybe a little higher AAV. It will be tough to keep 91 or 88 as they won't have much left after Chytil, Laf, and Miller, plus a space will be needed if Othmann is ready. They may have 1-2m left for a Motte type 4th liner.
Very good deal for both sides. Lafreniere is up next I am sure. I'd love to keep Kane and/or Tara, I really like Tara, but the only way that happens is they'd have to take very team friendly deals and say we have made a lot of money, now we want to play in NY with a chance to win every season. That or we make a big trade to free cap space.
I'd think Miller will come in around 2.5-3. Nothing they can do about Trouba's contract, but $8m for him is $3m too much and that is a hurt, especially with the cap not going up much.
It is not $3M too much. The guy is a leader, the Captain, hits all over the place. You have to value those things as well. His hit against Crosby in the playoffs turned that series around. His hit in the Hawks game this year maybe turned the season around. You need to value more than points and goals with a dman. He does a lot for this team that isn't just scoring. If he is overpaid, it is maybe by $1-1.5M, certainly not $3M.
Nice extension. Chytil earned it and will only get better. I hope they can sign Tarasenko going forward.
I would hesitate to re-sign Kane at this stage of his career. He is still a good player but not as dynamic as he used to be. If they can only keep one of them give me Tarasenko.
I would likely agree but let’s see how they both play in the playoffs. I have a feeling Kane has another gear starting in April.
Chytil is hardly developed well for the amount of time he has in the league. Yet, another example you are clueless AL. He's been in the league what I would consider 5 years. Not counting his 9 game NHL debut. His career high is 42 points. Before this year it was 23 points. He was taken 21st overall. Sad that you think he's developed. The player in front of him Thomas the last 2 years has had 77 and 63 points. Norris drafted 2 spots ahead of him had 35 goals and 55 points last year. Frost who was taken 6 spots behind him has 38 points this year with barely any help this season. I won't even get into Lafreniere and Kakko which would just embarrass you.
Chytil is our best homegrown forward after Kreider and might not even break 50 points despite being his 5th full season in the league. Kreider had his first full season 9 years ago and in almost a decade we haven't been able to develop a forward to put up even 50 points in a season for us. How sad is that for this team when it comes to developing forwards.
It’s not good but as mentioned here it is a unique situation where young players on this team are coming to a team that actually doesn’t suck. The flipside is if they develop young players properly will they have to go out and get a Tarasenko or a Kane? Giving up draft picks?
Chytil is a 3rd line player who averages about 4 minutes less ice time per game than Thomas (arguably the Blues top C). Maybe the problem isn't developing forwards so much as it is drafting forwards? That was the same draft class they took Lias Anderson with the 7th overall pick. at least he is finding success in the AHL...but that was a horrible pick when taken after him were players like Middlestadt, Necas, Suzuki and (oh my god 31 picks later) Robertson. There are 5 other forwards drafted in the 1st round with Chytil who have outscored him. That's it...he is coming along just fine on a team who has more talent stacked in front of him than any of those other forwards. And you can even argue the approach the Rangers took with him (and Kakko/Laf) will allow the Rangers to keep these players on the roster at a reasonable cost when they have a lot of cap space tied up with a handful of high priced veterans.
Yes, because of their under development we will be able to sign them to extended contracts below what they would have gotten if they were putting up big numbers, so that is a "benefit" of holding them back. On the other hand, as Dump mentioned above, would we have needed to go out and get Kane/Tara this year, or Vatrano last year, if Kakko and Lafreniere were putting up 2nd line #s? probably not. Or we could have instead used whatever we gave up for them to bring in scrappy 3rd liners to make us more physical and make us more well rounded, as some have mentioned recently that we are very skill-heavy and may lack physicality.
I think we need to look at the reality of the New York Rangers - we are going to go after stars - that is it. So Kane, Nash, Tara, Pan etc. are guys we will always go after. I don't see that ever changing on Broadway. That will always slow young players simply due to role and opportunity. We also were never a bottom feeder or worst team in the NHL, and we drafted these kids. So we had some good vets, and we added stars, as we will always do. It limits their opportunity. We talk about the PP, yeah you say Kakko or Laf should have been on PP1. We can sit here and say X should be off, but when you have Z, Pan, Kreider, and Fox at the start, your options for PP1 are very limited - maybe max one spot open for 4 or 5 solid choices. Now we have a guy like Tara on PP2 due to the talent we have. So say what you want, you don't have to agree with it, but this is the reality of the New York Rangers.
Are you telling me no other teams make trades for vets come the trade deadline? The Rangers are the only team that does this apparently. Btw..some guy name Pavel is doing wonders for the Blues...they did a great job developing him.
