Nick Gilbert, son of Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, dies at 26

Nick Gilbert, familiar to NBA fans as the Cleveland Cavaliers' representative at the draft lottery, died Saturday from a genetic condition. He was 26.

The son of Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and wife Jennifer, Nick had a lifelong battle with neurofibromatosis (NF1), which causes noncancerous tumors to grow on the brain, spinal cord and skin. There is no cure.

His death was announced by the Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield, Michigan. The Gilberts live in Michigan.

"Nick was a light and inspiration to so many throughout his 26 years of life," the Cavaliers said in a statement Sunday. "Whether taking on his signature role as the Cavs' good luck charm during several NBA Draft Lotteries or using his voice to advocate in the fight against NF, Nick's unrelenting spirit has been a driving force behind our organization."

Dan Gilbert is the founder and chairman of Rocket Companies and has owned the Cavaliers since 2005. He frequently sent Nick to the NBA draft lottery to sit in the Cavaliers' chair, and he brought good luck to the team. With Nick, wearing his typical bow tie, in the seat, the Cavs twice got the No. 1 pick in the draft lottery.

Booker has made 34 of his last 42 shots. That is wild.

Sochan shouldn't have beaten him out. The guy only played in 56 games. His defense is overrated. He also shot like ass.

Shaedon was the better player and he played in more games.

Time for him to go to Dame and find that huge chip that goes between the Clavicle and the Scapula. Learn how to play with that in place.

Sharpe deserved it but nobody really remembers who made rookie teams.

The owner of the Suns should be relegated to the owners box on the strength of that silly " Ginobli-esqe" flop alone.

Sharpe was a late bloomer. He didn't get large minutes early. You also could say he was just feeling out the League the 1st half of the season. But man, did he finish the year looking like the second best rookie out there. The future is bright as long as Sharpe puts the work in. He needs to be doing it "Dametime Style".

He played more minutes and looked worse. Look at the stats. They were pretty close but Shae was a MUCH better shooter.

Jabari's shot didn't come along till very late in the season. But he did start looking like the shooter he was in college. But Jabari's nose for rebounding, both offensive and defensive was pretty good. He has a nose for the ball. I think he will step his game up in year 2. His father gave him a strong work ethic. He won't sit during the summer feeling all satisfied.

I certainly didn’t watch him enough to disagree with you. I know stats rarely tell the story.
Just my thoughts on it. Seems like Sharpe was very young and played like it until they started tanking.

The stakes were a lot less for Houston and San Antonio. They started the season tanking. They were never trying to win, trying to make the playoffs, etc.

Shae had to get minutes over a HOFer in Dame and a guy who earned his spot last year in Ant. Hard to give him significant minutes over those two. So when we started tanking, he could play loose and start getting up some shots.

Sochan and Smith were starters from day one and played on teams with zero pressure. He arguably outplayed both of them.

Hopefully nobody except Shaedon. The fact is when he was given a similar opportunity to the guys that are on the teams (the opportunity of being a featured part of their team's offense) Shaedon was the second best rookie this year to Banchero. Shae is a monster and I hope this feeds his fire.
