The Mystery of the NBA Team That Billions Can’t Buy

Maybe it's not the time. I have a feeling this is the way she stays close to Paul. Joe has given her , what looks to be , an education on all things basketball. She seems to be enjoying herself. Plus, Phil has not shown a deep love of the Blazers. We need someone to be , All In, and a fan of OUR beloved basketball team. When Jody is ready, she'll be ready. As far as the other LA dude goes. Show us buddy that you're all in. Go to every game, where the colors. Denounce all things LA basketball wise. This is the Mother Freakin' Wayyyyyyyyyyyy. Go Blazers!

And Jody will sell, when she is "God Damn good and ready", you get that! Wall Street Writer.

I wish Bezos would buy us, which is totally possible by the way as rumors have surfaced after failing to buy the WFT he has turned his attention to the Seahawks. Maybe Jody sells both franchises to him and we never hear the words “Luxury Tax” again.

Then he'll build a new arena with no bathrooms, so you can either hold it, or piss in a bottle.

Rumor is that they’re waiting for the next TV deal to sell because the value will go up a lot.

I think that’s in 2025.

I have no problem with Jody owning the team...Bert and Jody have shown a lot of support for the team under Joe Cronin..I don't get the hate at all. I think Jody hired a better GM than Paul did.

Olshey kind of forced Jody to switch or I don't think she would have.

This is the make or break off-season/trade deadline for Joe, imo.

I wouldn't make that assumption but you're welcome to speculate...nobody forces a billionaire to make a decision ....and she did make a switch. Nothin' to do with Olshey other than he became exposed by his own staff. Same with Bert....he's been around the team constantly since Olshey got fired. Looks to me like they are enjoying remolding the team.

Totally agree. Allowing Joe to build the staff with people like Mike Schmitz shows a ton of smarts as well. I get that people love Phil. He's built an empire with Nike. Him and Penny do amazing things for schools, medical research, and on & on through their generosity. But to own an NBA, or any other franchise, you have to love it, and be all in. He loves the U of O, and it shows. He didn't clap Once, for the Blazers ,when i sat next to him during a Boston, Blazers game in the Drexler years.

Still a make or break off-season.

And they were forced. Olshey wasn't gonna leave and they didn't want him to leave. Lol but the reports were getting to be too much. But it was good cause olshey fucking sucked at everything he did lol.

I bumped into Jody at Walmart dairy aisle back in late March, asked her when she's selling the Blazers. She said, it's breaking her heart thinking about it, she then added she enjoys the team way more than she initially anticipated

I would have told her to Keep the team till you want to sell. Don't be pressured to sell. Her brother loved the team, more than the Seahawks. Sell the Hawks to Bezos or whoever for 5 bil. Focus on the Blazers. I feel her Brother would approve.

Guys getting fired are rarely "going to leave" Stren...HR dept threw up a flag and management fired the guy...it's simple..no conspiracy theory behind it. Happens everyday in the business world.

I bumped into Jody at the monster truck rally. She said she’s gonna sell the team to Donald Trump.

Very long story. As a journalist myself, I am against copying paid work for free. But here is one of the most interesting aspect of it.

Jody Allen was approved by the NBA’s board of governors to serve as the Trail Blazers’ governor until the team is sold by the estate, according to a person familiar with the situation. The NBA requires any team held by an estate to be transferred within a reasonable time period—a span ultimately determined by the league, according to the person familiar.

In several separate phone conversations with Kolde, people familiar with the situation say, Smolinisky and Knight laid out their vision to keep the Blazers in Portland forever. They would invest in the team to make it a championship contender. They would boost the fan experience off the court by improving the area around the arena, according to people familiar with their thinking.

Knight has few peers in the history of global sports marketing. He and his family are worth more than $40 billion, according to Bloomberg. He has a groundswell of local support.

Yet Knight’s conversations with Kolde hit a wall, and Kolde didn’t explain why the Blazers weren’t for sale.

This part is huge. When the NBA is ready they’ll have her sell and use this clause.

Adam Silver will eventually help Phil Knight who from all accounts has been wanted by all the sports league to be part of their ownership group over the years

Just bake the price in with that deal in mind
Yeah, I don't get why signing the TV deal would change the valuation.

Only way it would is if there's a lot of risk TV deal will be for less money than anticipated. But that would mean there's a chance TV deal is finalized for much lower and Jody cant sell the team for as much as people are thinking.

I don’t think that’s what it means. It means it can’t sit in a trust. So I think the NBA would require that Jody take full possession of the team within a certain time period.

but I believe the trust requires that it be sold, so Jody would have to buy the team before it could be transferred.

If it makes you feel better, it's a Murdoch paper

It should, but it doesn't. I work for company who the bosses are billionaires but I still do my job and if my work is stolen, then I am in trouble. Not my boss.

What did she buy, though?

I bumped into Jody on this forum. She was posting under the handle "Calvin Natt." Told me she always was a big fan of the underdog forward.

Per federal law, a family trust can remain open for up to 21 years.

Also, a family trust is started when the person or family is still alive. So the Blazers (along with other assets and possessions) were in a trust when Paul Allen was still alive.

The Blazers were transferred from a legal entity to a different legal entity. All teams are legal corporations, one person may own the corporation but it's never a sole proprietorship.

Nothing has changed with the ownership of the Blazers since Paul Allen died.

The NBA may want new owners for the Blazers but I don't see them having a leg to stand on in this. This isn't a Donald Sterling situation or even a Seattle Sonic situation. The team is free from (major) scandal and is financially healthy.

Have they said when the trust was originally created?
