Why do you get the impression Jody wants to sell? I think she may want to control the team for 20 years and cash the checks from managing the portfolio. She gets nothing from a sale.
Trust is private so I'm not sure we'll ever know exactly how it is broken down for certain - but the most credible reports sounds like proceeds will eventually all go to charity. Jody can get a ton ($100 million plus per season) by controlling and managing it if its not sold.
What I am getting from this is you can only have two big contracts, and that Portland should hope Sharpe and Scoot earn them from Portland. Dame's contract could soon become a boat anchor, especially if it were paired with a LaVine, Leonard, etc... You want your big contracts going to stars in their 5-9 year range. Older vets could be facing challenges due to this. It all seems very odd. Teams that draft well should get an exemption, say if they don't have a huge free agent contract on the books. I would hate for Portland to have another great draft next year, hit on it, but then lose a homegrown all star because of this CBA. Just thinking out loud.
She needs to sell, that simple for me. She is the cringiest owner in the league, and we will never reach the heights us fans want if she is in charge, I firmly believe that.
I would love it if she sells. Its just beyond unfortunate Paul set up the transition of his team to be so chaotic and run by a related party that has self interest in the sale (or non sale).
Yeah if Sharpe and Scoot become max players do the Blazers even want to hit on acquiring a 3rd allstar in the draft? 3 max contracts starts to get very difficult to build with. This CBA has a lot of consequences we don't fully understand. It may change a lot of the prior best team building strategies. Even outside this dynamic we've seen a shift with less dominant teams and much more parity in the league, which I really like. I always liked the idea of Dirk/Wade/Kobe etc having a contract that only counts half against the cap. Maybe if you've been a 5x allstar, over the age of 34 and have been with the same team over 10 years. Those guys seems like they should still all get paid but their teams shouldn't be forced to dump them to improve the cap. Obviously that would be a Lillard situation if he were to stay here.
Dont think he's looked hard enough. Or maybe he doesn't want to given Dame might want out. Or maybe he is too attached.
I get the impression Joe is either getting lowballed for Ant or being asked to take back too much salary for him. Ant could be traded for picks as a salary dump but his contract is very friendly...I'd talk to the Lakers about Hachimura for Ant.
It really feels like Joe doesn't think we can do what Dame wants and that Dame is inevitably going to be gone. If that's the case, why would he want to dump Ant for nothing?
Actually this is a very good idea and should be ran up the flag pole with the NBA. The unintended consequences of this new CBA on older stars could force them to hold out/strike. Remember, we have the term Larry Bird Rights because the Celtics were about to lose Bird due to McHale and Parrish getting their big contracts before him. The Celtics owner had enough power to appeal this oversight and the League realized they needed Bird/Boston vs Magic/Lakers.
Thanks. Guess I'm about 9 months to late though right? I believe the new CBA goes to 2029 or something
Probably not, but as it is, Sochan will be a bench player next season. Ant would be more integral to that team's success than Sochan's.
