    **sigh**

Just when the Blazers were getting me optimistic about things...

I don't hate keeping Grant, since I'm assuming we are going to keep Dame and do our best with our young guards, but... WHY DID WE GIVE HIM SO MUCH?!?

What other team was going to offer him anything approaching that? How many games would we have not won over the next few years by losing him?

Grant is not one of my favorite players as it is (he shoots a lot, he doesn't rebound, he is small for his position, and the list goes on and one) but on a team with (a) Dame, (b) young guards that are going to need shots, and (c) an offensive-minded center, having a shoot-first (shoot-only?) power forward like Grant simply shouldn't be a priority to the point where we're paying him this much. Ugh.

This is a ridiculous deal but it had to be done. We keep his salary slot or we have no other avenues to improve later on.

I'm not so sure. We could have had cap space next season.. we are currently sitting at about $10m in practical cap space in 2024-25, and without that $30m being added we could have had a chance to make a splash next summer OR to take contracts on for additional value, etc. Now those options are just about dead to us.

It helps on the floor, of course, and it keeps Dame happy, evidently, and Portland seems unwilling to add ANY big guys so... who knows?

This contract is not as bad. I think people are over-reacting. He's been projected to command north of 30k prior to the signing. I've always thought 30 on year 1 is overpay. He's actually making under 30 on year 1. This is probably market value for Jerami. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. I was hoping he averages just under 30 per. . But there aren't many 20 ppg forwards in the NBA

Who thought he'd get more than $30m/year over five years?

Here's what Hollinger had to say a couple of weeks ago (the dollar figure is what he projected his value in the upcoming season as):

    18. Jerami Grant, PF, 29, Portland: $18,560,550
The Blazers seem pot-committed to keeping this group around Damian Lillard together and trying to push the boulder up the hill one more time, but at what cost? Grant is eligible for a four-year, $112 million extension between now and July 1, but even that would seemingly overvalue him based on his age and recent production. Paying him more seems absolutely batty, plus it yanks Portland ever closer to the tax line.

Yet the Blazers also must fret about potential interlopers in the Grant bidding — a return to Detroit, for instance, or the Pacers using their heap of cap space to fill a yawning gap at the four. It certainly seems that whatever deal Grant gets ends up exceeding this BORD$ value, but a nine-figure deal that pays him until he’s 33 still feels like a reach.
Obviously Hollinger is just one dude, but I didn't read anyone in the media who thought he'd get this much, let alone that it would be a good idea.

Busy day. Just catching up. This is not great but it certainly could be worse.
It will be fine because its backloaded. Cba will kick in and this will not be an albatross.
    But we need more.

Percentage of cap is probably a better way of looking at deals.

He’s making about 7 mil too much per year, but with the cap going up and up and up, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this considered a decent contract in year 3,4 and 5

it is an overpay, but as long as grant is healthy the contract won’t be an albatross.

Hollinger's wasn't him predicting, it's based on some rating system or another of his. It had Van Vleet at 47 million per

its an overpay, but our situation and market was likely always going to result in this - either with or without dame, be it grant or anyone else of note.

im more interested in what the plan with Ant and Nurk is

It seems pretty clear that they're just going to be kept. Especially Nurk, given we have no other center options on our roster with Eubanks leaving.

My thought was we were going to be over the cap for the next few years regardless. So even though he was overpaid I am not sure it will hinder us much.

I don’t think much of anything seems pretty clear until we see what happens with trades and exceptions.
