PORTLAND, Ore. — A new study finds half the beaches in the U.S. are contaminated with sewage or feces, but it's particularly bad in Oregon.

According to a study by Environment Texas, Oregon had six beaches that hit unsafe levels of contamination 75% of the time the EPA ran tests.

Here's a list of the top five dirtiest beaches in Oregon.

    • Seal Rock State Recreation Site
    • Nye Beach
    • Tolovana Beach State Wayside
    • Cannon Beach
    • Manzanita Beach
Nye Beach is currently under a health advisory after the Newport City Water Treatment Plant released over a million gallons of untreated water.

Having some reasonable insights into these kinds of issues, I'd lay the bulk of the responsibility on the toothless and hopelessly compromised Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, overseen by the equally toothless and constantly under siege (by the right) Environmental Protection Agency.......kind of hard to move forward without the political will.....or the desire to provide adequate funding and enforcement. Sadly, Oregon talks a far better game than it actually plays.........

I love mussels and oysters and shellfish but I won't eat them from the Oregon Coast....rented a bungalow on the beach in Yachats once and the wife and I got bad food poisoning from the mussels....it's was clear too....usually they say don't eat them until 10 days after a rain. This was a dry spell so it wasn't cattle manure that leeched into the bay. They looked fresh. Smelled fresh. Fooled us.

I’m in Hawaii and I see a ton of homeless and yet no litter or graffiti anywhere.

The OP really surprised me...from what little I had been told in the past, I was always was under the impression that the Oregon coast is beautiful...perception isn't everything...live and learn, I guess.

The Oregon Coast is stunningly beautiful but honestly, the ocean is a trash bin everywhere....you'd be amazed how much garbage is dumped in the ocean 24/7....

Yes it’s an absolute shithole…. Make sure you tell people not to go there. It’s horrible. Just like the city of Portland. Stay away.

Longer than most folks think. I snorkled all over the pacific rim and it's sad how much pollution is in the ocean...we've been killing the coral reefs for many decades. For the most part the beaches are clean...it's the water that's often not or the ocean floor..I think Hawaii has the cleanest water I've snorkeled in and it's the furthest from any major continents. In many poor countries you could pay any sailor with a raft to dump anything you want in the ocean for 50 bucks or so. I've seen medical waste bags covering coral reefs before.

That's sad...but then again, it shouldn't be surprising................humans always seem to find a way to fuck things up.

Out of site, out of mind...I understand New York City's daily garbage used to be carted out to sea on barges..not sure if they do that anymore

I wonder how much of this is due to people burying their dogs crap in the sand rather than picking it up.

Corrupt sellout Democrats. The environment, and thereby the people, get screwed over, just the same.

Very, very little. You're talking millions upon millions of gallons of clean new water for every pile of dog crap.

This would be like draining Bull Run because that kid pissed in it.

No, this is due to run off from farms, yards, streets, and sewers.

Maybe you should do your own research. Assuming you understand what that is.........
