    Re: Jon_Vilma's Mock Draft

    1. Houston - Reggie Bush, RB, So. Cal.The pick that everyone knows is coming. Reggie Bush solidified his status as the number 1 overall player in the NFL draft with a blazing 4.33 40 yard dash time at his pro day, along with 25 lifts on the bench. While I personally believe Houston should take D’Brickashaw Ferguson with this pick, Reggie Bush will sell tickets a la Michael Vick and be a versatile player that will allow the new coach Kubiak to draw up some nasty trick plays.2. New Orleans - Mario Williams, DE, N.C. StateNew Orleans recently traded former starting Left Tackle Wayne Gandy to the Atlanta Falcons and that very well could lead to the drafting of D’Brickashaw Ferguson. However I don’t think that it increases the likelihood of such a pick that much since Gandy was already in his mid-30’s and the Saints have two young, quality OT’s that are ready to step up and be the bookends for years to come. Mario is the top defensive player in this draft and will give the saints the 2nd edge rusher that they need.3. Tennessee - Vince Young, QB, TexasNorm Chow is the offensive coordinator for the Titans which causes many to assume Matt Leinart will get the nod here. However Leinart isn’t a great fit for the Titan’s system of mobility and big play passing rather than the “dink and dunk” style. Vince Young fits the system, has more upside, and is great friends with the current QB Steve McNair, which will shorten the learning curve and make Young a viable option for the 2007 season.4. New York Jets - D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, VirginiaIt’s a tough call for Mike Tannenbaum between D’Brickashaw and Leinart; however he has shown a predilection for going after what the team needs rather than the big names in most cases. While the Jets could use a QB for the future, they desperately need a bookend Left Tackle to anchor the O-line and protect his QB. The New York fan base that always turns out at the draft might send in the boos, but they’ll be loving this pick in a couple years when he’s locking down the blind side every game.5. Arizona (via Green Bay) - Matt Leinart, QB, So. Cal.Leinart is just plain too good to fall out of the top 5. Green Bay needs LB’s, but they know that historically top 5 LB’s just aren’t worth the pick nor the money and seize upon their luck of Leinart’s dropping to make a trade. This is a good move for Arizona simply because you can envision this: Leinart fakes to Edgerrin James, looks downfield and pump-fakes towards Larry Fitzgerald and then launches the ball deep to Anquan Boldin. Such a 4some would rival any in the league, and with Warner in place for a couple years Leinart can take his time to develop for a year.6. San Francisco - A.J. Hawk, LB, Ohio StateAs I mentioned before, drafting a LB high in the draft pans out rarely, and even when it does it’s not a game-changing pick (see Lavar Arrington). However A.J. fits the 49ers needs perfectly as they’ve been bleeding pretty much every quality player on the defensive side of the ball. Hawk is an outstanding LB that can work inside or out in the 3-4 setup as he has great strength and sideline-to-sideline speed (40, cone, and shuttle are all tops). The ‘Niners really need a WR as well, but there simply are none of top 10 quality.7. Oakland - Michael Huff, S/CB, TexasA bit of an odd pick here for Oakland at first glance. However the Raiders need 1 thing above all: Defense. They have their corners (or so they think) but both of their Safeties are lackluster underachievers who are in desperate need of an upgrade. Michael Huff has all the tools to succeed, especially the raw speed that Oakland highly covets. The Raiders would have preferred to add a LB here but with Hawk gone none are worth the pick. Don’t count out the Raiders swiping Haloti Ngata out from under the Bills either.8. Buffalo - Haloti Ngata, DT, OregonEveryone in the AFC East loved how much the formerly dominant Bills’ D struggled without a bulwark DT in the center to gobble up O-linemen. This is exactly why the best DT in the draft makes perfect sense here, even though the Bills signed Larry Tripplett. With Tripplett in place and Ngata coming along the bang can return to Buffalo’s D. There is a ton of upside to this kid, however there is the downside that he has a big heart and doesn’t always play with a mean streak.9. Detroit - Winston Justice, OT, So. Cal.Winston Justice is by far the most physically gifted OT that worked out in this year’s draft (D’Brickashaw didn’t test). He put up 38 bench reps with some of the longest arms while prospects like Eric Winston couldn’t even manage 20 with shorter arms. Amazingly athletic, Justice will be able to handle speed rushers as well head-on bull-rushers. Detroit needs someone besides Kelly Butler to bookend opposite Jeff Backus and Justice is a good enough run blocker to handle the RT spot.10. Green Bay (via Arizona) - Ernie Sims, LB, FSUGreen Bay has a lot of holes to fill so trading down here to pick up an extra 2nd round pick. Ernie Sims is one of the fastest LB’s in this draft and even though he isn’t huge he hits like a ton of bricks. Sims anchored one of the best LB corps in college football last year at Florida State and despite not being a Middle Linebacker he was the leader and general of the ‘Noles’ defense. He is very much in the mould of A.J. Hawk so Green Bay would do very well to pick him up here at 10. 11. St. Louis - Vernon Davis, TE, MarylandVernon Davis is a physical freak and very well could the best player in this draft. If only he were a RB, OT, QB, or another key position he’d be going in the top 5 of this draft. As it is he’s a Tight End and thus slips a little and falls here to St. Louis. New Head Coach Scott Linehan will be elated to have Davis fall into his lap as he loves to utilize the tight end in his system at both Miami and at Minnesota. Vernon will give a jumpstart to “the greatest show on turf” that will offset the aging of Isaac Bruce nicely. 12. Minnesota (via Cleveland) - Jay Cutler, QB, VanderbiltMinnesota acquired the firepower for this trade by selling mutilated star QB Daunte Culpepper to the highest bidder for a 2nd round pick to Miami. This is a move to get in front of anyone who might be wanting to take the last remaining good QB prospect in this draft out from under them. The Vikings are currently running the show with 62 year old Brad Johnson at QB with Mike McMahon, a player who wasn’t invited back to be Joey Harrington’s backup sitting behind him so a top young QB makes sense.13. Baltimore - Marcus McNeill, OT, AuburnBaltimore has one of the top OT’s in the NFL on their left side; however they are missing the bookend for the right side of their line as the recently let Orlando Brown go. Just as well, since the Ravens needed to inject some youth into their aging line anyhow. McNeill is a blue collar hard worker who can eventually take over the Left Tackle spot once it’s time for Jon Ogden moves on in a few years as well as serve as a solid Right Tackle in the mean time.14. Philadelphia - Chad Greenway, LB, IowaThe Eagles were decimated last year by injuries and the disease known as T.O. This year could be very different for Philadelphia though things will be even tougher with their division being the best in the NFC. Greenway is an ideal fit for the Eagles as he is as excellent in coverage as he is in rush defense. Some people thought he might be the top LB prospect in the league to the start of the 2005 season, so he has slipped a little bit due to the workout emergence of Sims and Hawk.15. Denver (via Atlanta) - Chad Jackson, WR, FloridaDenver would have liked to have added a top QB prospect and very well could pull the trigger on a trade to move up and do so in a couple weeks. However, since they missed out on the top 3 QB’s, they must move on to their next biggest area of need: WR. Rod Smith can’t play forever, Ashley Lelie is a bust, and Darius Watts was never good enough to even be called a “bust.” Chad Jackson is 1 of only two legit number 1 WR prospects in this draft and will be able to help out Jake Plummer very soon.16. Miami - Jimmy Williams, CB/S, Va. TechIt’s hard to tell what the Dolphins’ defense needs more: A top CB to pair with Will Allen or a playmaking Free Safety to pick off QB’s week in and week out. Luckily Jimmy Williams can suffice at either position and will allow the Dolphins to decide a bit later where to place him based on their needs at the time. Williams may be a tough sell to the Phins’ fan base as his stock in the eyes of some has dropped a little, but I’m still high on him and he was brought in for an interview in Miami recently.17. Cleveland (via Minnesota) - Bodrick Bunkley, DT, FSUSecond year Head Coach Romeo Crennel has done a fine job in rebuilding the Browns thus far and has added Willie McGinest and Ted Washington to help fill in the defense. Washington is a 1 year fix though and a more permanent NT is needed for the Browns. Bodrick Bunkley is a great DT with the ability to tie up blockers as well as rush the passer when need; and he plays with a mean streak which is exactly what is needed along the D-line. 18. Dallas - Donte Whitner, S, Ohio StateWhat does Bill Parcells love? Defense. The Cowboys have solid to great players at every position sans the Free Safety spot opposite Roy Williams. Whitner is a ballhawk who has the skills to play Corner if his team really wanted him to, though he’s definitely better suited for the Safety spot for sure. The Cowboys are another team that would love to add a player like Jay Cutler were he to fall, but he won’t fall, and the Cowboys don’t trade up in the draft.19. San Diego - Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio StateKeenan McCardell is solid, but not a true number 1 and Eric Parker is nothing more than a slot WR pretending to be a number 2. Santonio Holmes is one of only two legit number 1 WR prospects in this draft, and along with Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, and Ladainian Tomlinson could create one of the most dynamic quartets of offensive talent in the league. The Chargers also need some serious defensive backfield help, but in my opinion Holmes is just too much to pass on here.20. Kansas City - Gabe Watson, DT, MichiganKansas City had a defense that was projected well but turned out to be a pretender. They have some talented LB’s who massively underachieved last year due to the lack of any true DT’s that gobble up blockers for them. Gabe Watson has done so well this offseason that he is actually a pretty major steal here at 20. He was so good at the Senior Bowl they actually had to side-line him in order to keep the O-linemen from being too badly dominated. Watson is sometimes criticized for the lack of a mean streak.21. New England - DeAngelo Williams, RB, MemphisI know, I said it myself: “New England will not take a RB in the first round.” With DeAngelo falling to them here, however, I can’t see them passing on such a great value so late in the draft. Corey Dillon really fell off last year, and even if he returns to form this year he still doesn’t have much left in the tank. The Pats have a history of drafting in an unorthodox fashion and going with the player they want regardless to public opinion and it’s worked well for them thus far.22. Denver (via Washington) - Tamba Hali, DE, Penn St.Denver failed in their attempt to acquire John Abraham from the Jets this offseason, and their attempt to due so only highlighted their need for a true playmaker on the D-line. Tamba Hali is a tough, blue collar, working class DE that can not only rush the passer with the best of them, but is also a very stout rush defender as well. He was the heart and soul of a very tight D-line on a top defense in the NCAA last year and can be a leader at the next level for the Broncos.23. Tampa Bay - Tye Hill, CB, ClemsonTampa Bay is a team that could go many different ways with their 1st round pick. They need a cover corner in the defensive backfield, young linebackers to rejuvenate their aging corps, and a true guardian OT to protect Chris Simms (would be a RT since Simms is Left Handed). Tye Hill has the talent to go 10 picks higher and drops due to his small stature, but he is a big man in a little man’s body with some great speed and hops to more than make up for his height.24. Cincinnati - Kamerion Wimbley, DE, FSUThe Bengals Defense is what it is: A bunch of sub-par talents who are overachieving to attain mediocrity thanks to an excellent defensive coach in Marvin Lewis. The Bengals also have what is probably the best young offense in the league. Translation: It’s time to upgrade the defense with some legit talent. The Bengals have 1 good pass rusher, so adding Wimbley would legitimize their D-line and help out the rest of the defense immensely.25. New York Giants - Jonathan Joseph, CB, USCThe Giants were in some serious need of help at the Corner position last year, and don’t fool yourself, signing Sam Madison to replace Will Allen isn’t the solution to the problem (and neither is R.W. McQuarters). Joseph is yet another playmaking DB out of South Carolina and will help solidify the defensive backfield in New York in order to supply the much needed support system for mistake-prone QB Eli Manning. The Giants’ also need help at LB.26. Chicago - Kelly Jennings, CB, MiamiChicago’s bread and butter is their dominating defense. Even though they are the best in the league and carried the offense and Kyle Orton to the playoffs last year, there is STILL room for improvement. Chicago is returning every single starter on defense, but they did lose Nickelback Jerry Azumah to retirement and no team can ever have enough depth at CB. Jennings is an underrated corner even as a first round prospect and will feet in nicely in Chicago. 27. Carolina - Jason Allen, S, TennesseeMany people see the Panthers taking an outside linebacker here in the first round; however if those people would look a bit deeper into the situation they’d see that the Panthers announced last week that they were moving SS Thomas Davis back to OLB which was his position in college. This shifts the Panthers’ need from OLB to SS. Enter Jason Allen. Allen is a hard-hitting safety with nice hands who will be able to force fumbles as well as pick a ball or two on this prolific defense.28. Jacksonville - Laurence Maroney, RB, MinnesotaJacksonville is known for it’s defense, however they have been putting together a quality offense fairly quietly considering. Byron Leftwich is the real deal, Matt Jones is a playmaker in the making, a young and versatile O-line, and Fred Taylor is very talented… and old (not to mention injury prone). Laurence Maroney is a quick and agile RB with quick feet and a surprisingly mean stiff arm. He fits the Jags’ offensive system perfectly and will allow the transformation to be close to completion.29. New York Jets (via Denver) - Nick Mangold, C, Ohio StateNew York’s biggest problem last year: The O-line. It’s the reason the running game faltered, the reason Chad Pennington was reinjured, and the reason Brooks Bollinger was running for his life every other play. Having already replacing Jason Fabini with D’Brickashaw Ferguson, it’s time to replace Kevin Mawae with the top Center prospect in the league. Proof of Mangold’s 1st round status? He was the sole player at the Senior Bowl who was able to handle the Bull-rush of Gabe Watson.30. Indianapolis - Joseph Addai, RB, L.S.U.*Pauses for the gasps to subside.* Yes, LenDale White has fallen off this much. Indianapolis tried to retain Edgerrin James but was unable to due to the massive contracts going out to their other offensive skill positions. This leaves them with a gaping hole in their backfield. Joseph Addai has been quietly improving his status on many draft boards with his great combine and pro day (including 4.40 speed) and will crack the first round as the Colts are looking for a guy just like him.31. Seattle - Mathias Kiwanuka, DE, Boston CollegeSeattle offered this pick to the New York Jets for John Abraham and failed due to the asking price being too high. Even though the Seahawks have two quality D-ends they obviously desire another pass rusher to supplement their current situation in a rotation and an eventual replacement. Mathias Kiwanuka was originally a possible top 10 pick but has slipped a lot due to the opinion that he’s a bit of a 1-trick-pony. However so is Abraham, which is why I see the ‘hawks biting on Kiwanuka here.32. Pittsburgh - Bobby Carpenter, LB, Ohio StateFor a team that just won the Superbowl, the Steelers have surprisingly many needs to fill. First and foremost is replenishing the well of talent at LB. Bobby Carpenter was overshadowed by A.J. Hawk at Ohio State but is a very talented OLB in his own right and is a great fit in Pittsburgh as he can not only rush the passer (as is standard for a 3-4 OLB), but also is solid in coverage. Carpenter could easily go a bit higher than this and the Steelers would be lucky to have him fall into their laps.* Arizona Traded the 10th and 41st overall picks to Green Bay for the 5th overall pick* Minnesota Traded the 17th and 51st overall picks to Cleveland for the 12th overall pick

Even with Hawk still on the board, I dont see Nolan passing up Vernon Davis. Alex Smith even said he wants the 49ers to draft him.

If Leinart's on the board at 4 I cant see us passing on him.....like you said about the Patriots "I know, I said it myself: ?New England will not take a RB in the first round.? The Pats have a history of drafting in an unorthodox fashion and going with the player they want regardless to public opinion and it?s worked well for them thus far." Just subtract all the Patriots References and replace them with the Jets and QB Leinart.Addai before White? While you might not like LenDale White, he still has a higher grade then that of Addai IMO.I think you have Sims and Greenway a little too high, I dont view either of them as a Top 15 pick personally. Also dont really see Allen as a first rounder at all, but I understand you went BPA and alot of teams have secondary needs. I do however like the majority of your picks though so good job and I liked the explanations of why.

I don't see why everyone has the Ravens drafting a OT in the first round when we got Adam Terry last year who will be great in a couple years

Vernon Davis set a damn record at the combine for the 40 for his position, did Hawk? No. Did he even have the fastest of LBs? No. Can you post VD's SS, TC, VL, and BJ? Im sure they are as impressive or more. VD benched 9 more reps than Hawk right? VD blew everyone away at the combine while Hawk had a solid showing. You are the first person I ever heard call Hawk a freak at LB, is he a playmaker? Yes. Freak? Not quite. Also what do you have to say about the Alex Smith arguement? The 49ers defense looked good and bad last season. 49ers offense? Horrible. Why pass on Vernon Davis, a FREAK that can help out the terrible offense and production of our franchise boy for a pretty damn good LB to put in a defense that is way ahead of the other side of the ball?

i think you are making some major stretches on the d line. I doubt watson or wimbley make the first round. also winter is way over valued. And I doubt the colts will take a RB in the first round if they cant get lawrence. But overall this is one of the better mocks i have seen. good job.

How is Gabe Watson a first round pick, to me he is a 2nd or even 3rd. Great Patriots pick, I do think they would pick Williams. However they could also look to draft an OLB in round 1 and try and get Addai or Drew in round 2.

Why pass on Vernon Davis, a FREAK that can help out the terrible offense and production of our franchise boy for a pretty damn good LB to put in a defense that is way ahead of the other side of the ball?</div>I think you're taking this a tad too seriously. He's had first round status since prior to the Senior Bowl, and he dominated the Senior Bowl and has looked good since. If Watson falls to the 2nd round and the Jets pass on him, I'll be throwing eggs at Tannenbaum next time I see him. Watson dominated everybody at the senior bowl aside from Nice Mangold, and Mangold and him were battling each other as equals. Also Addai has been on the rise since he ran a 4.40 40 at his pro day in a side-ways wind environment (meaning the wind was neither at his back nor his front). He fits the Colts' offensive program perfectly since he can catch out the backfield, block, and is shifty. He's not a power-runner but he's not Michael Bennett either. IMO Whitner is overrated as well. I personally think Ko Simpson is better than him. But the scouts are all going crazy over the guy for some reason. I don't know why his stock has soared, but the scouts are all saying it is... and I'd rather be realistic than go with what I think teams should do. If I drafted what I thought teams should do, the top 5 would be D'Brickashaw, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Mario Williams, Vernon Davis.Oh, and Kiper just mocked Whitner at pick 16, just to show what I was saying.

Personally, I'd much rather have Vince Young, as you predicted, but I don't see the Titans FO passing up on Leinart if he's still there.
