I agree to an extent - although when Twitter or Facebook or Youtube or some of these places become so enormous with no competition, they are basically monopolies. If there are no alternatives of a different venue then they might lose some of the discretion smaller private organizations have.

The lobby is infested with rats, the windows are broken, and there are human feces on the floor.

It's a health hazard, needs to be condemned.

(no, not at all seriously suggesting he be put out of business by the government)

But it would be nice if he paid back all the money they gave him.

I removed the twitter widget on the right side of the forum page.

The reason why I haven't set up https: is that this forum is very old, the software is very old, and any changes to URLs like https:// vs http:// may affect bookmarks, search engine results, links from other sites, links within posts, and so on. On the surface it seems like a simple thing, but there are likely to be certain gotchas.

That said, about https, the software does not send clear passwords across the http connection. In fact, the password is never ever sent at all.

Our biggest risk, security wise, is that someone breaches an existing account - worse if it's a moderator or admin type account. This can happen if we don't have strong passwords here, or if you use the same password here as you do on some other site that gets compromised.

Changing the forum software is a huge lift. Even doing an upgrade to the existing software has unknown bad side effects. Unfortunately, xenforo is not scalable as designed (images and avatars and other files are served from the file system).

But making this site available 24/7/365 with virtually no issues for all these years has been my main focus. The more I would mess with things, the less chance there is of wrecking the existing experience without making things better. I know there have been a handful of times where the site's had issues and I've fixed those as quickly as possible. In general, though, since we started running xenforo, the site has been available 24/7/365 except when the physical machine we're hosting on at AWS failed, or recently the slowness in the database that I fixed when I was notified of the problem.

I'm around, just not posting. I do have one post to make in the forum, regarding Scoot and Dame.
