The only Panda Express in Tigard is in Washington Square. Also not sure what the Panda Expresses look like in NEP, but I have a hard time believing they look like this:
(not that this is pretty, it looks more like a 1960's high school, but if that's what you think Panda Expresses look like, NEP must have some weird ass Panda Expresses)

The ones in Portland don’t have a big half empty parking lot in front to take a decent picture from the edge of the property.

That's not from the edge of the property, and there's a road in front of that entrance.

If you define "coolness" by hipster metrics like record stores, thrift shops, vegan restaurants and micro breweries, then it makes perfect sense. I'm sure our preponderance of man buns and electric unicycles also significantly improved our score...

All this time I thought the coolest city in the US was Fairbanks, Alaska...

One might call that culture. Something the suburbs doesn’t have FAMS! You can build as many strip malls as you want, it ain’t happening. I’ll take NE Fremont over whatever that strip from I-5 to Tigard is….99W? Mile upon Mile of strip malls and traffic. I’ll dodge a couple bullets as long as I can sit outside La Sereneta on NE 28th and Alberta listening to music.

You do not think there are microbreweries and restaurants with live music in cool locations in the suburbs?

No disrespect @THE HCP, but judging the suburbs based on strip malls is the same as judging the cities by homeless encampments.

Also, as someone that lived in NYC in the past, I am pretty sure they measure culture by world class theatre productions, world class museums and galleries, not tattoo parlors.

Isn't it measured by how high the garbage can be piled on the sidewalks? I've always admired the fierce competition in that area.

I had family out here from the east coast last week/weekend. My mom brought her new "boyfriend" who is an old school southern republican that watches fox news exclusively. He refused to stay in a hotel in "portland proper" so they got a room at one of the hotels on the Vancouver waterfront. We all met up and went to the coast. The old southern republican that refused to stay in "portland proper" suggested that we take a quick tour downtown so he can take pictures of what he thought was going to be carnage. I obliged. Took him downtown, drove around for 20 minutes and he said "I don't see anything, let's go."

He was downright disappointed that what he thought he'd see based on the "news" he ingested was in fact not what was reality. It was beautiful down there. I laughed.
